SilencerCo Scythe Ti failures

I am curious about something. I am not an engineer. I don’t know if this is possible. But, is it possible that the issue with the Scythe and higher powder capacity cartridges and short barrels is that unburnt powder is getting trapped in the suppressor. Then igniting? Or is it just bad welds?

It might not even be bad welds necessarily as much as the silencer just getting pressed beyond its capabilities.

I have enough smaller chamberings that need a suppressor I just stuck my scythe on a 223 and I’ve not given it a second thought. Ideally it would be bomb proof but this thread doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzies on larger chamberings so I don’t use it there.

Failure #1
On a Sig Cross, 6.5 Creed (18" barrel), shooting Hornady 140 grain factory loads. The suppressor had approximately 1400 rounds through it and all of it on that rifle. I shhot a lot (obviously) and my typical range session is 60-100 rounds in a 3-4 hour period. It does get hot but I don't think I ever came close to 10 rounds in 60 seconds. I did have a cover on it which was blown to pieces.

Failure was at the first weld in front of the blast chamber.

SiCo fixed it and had it back to me in 10 days including shipping time to the East Coast. It looked brand new. No carbon to be found anywhere.

I've put about 400 more rounds through this can and was using it on a 16" barrel .308. I had about 60 rounds through it during this range session, shooting M80 ball ammo. Again, it was hot but I had been running 3 shot drills so I never came close to the 10 rounds/minute mark. I was not using a cover this time.

This time, it was at the third weld in front of the blast chamber.

I have this one on video but I told SiCo that I would refrain from posting it until we figured out what to do about it. It is on the way back to them now.

SiCo will give the same line of BS they always do........less than 1% affected, high rate of rapid fire, shooter error, misapplication, etc.

Some positive news, SilencerCo repaired my suppressor very quickly and I was able to use my SilencerShop guarantee to get a refund. Just need to wait on the Form 4 to return the Scythe and get my refund.

Thanks to SilencerCo (I guess) and SilencerShop (for sure) because I absolutely do not trust this repaired can.

So it was a different weld the second time? I wonder if you blow it up enough times if the repairs will be better than the original.

If you blow it up 8 times then it's finally reliable.

What was their response when you informed them the failure was on video? Does the video show anything interesting, other than your one piece can turning into a two piece can?

Their response was to ask to have it back and comment after they have a chance to look at it in person.

I should clear up one thing about my video. I have a YouTube channel that concentrates on Scout Rifles and General Purpose rifles. I don't have a huge following but big enough to catch a little attention. I was filming a video for this when the failure happened. I then shot some footage showing a closeup of the weld and a description of the failure. This was really just for SiCo to get the whole picture and that is the video I am waiting to hear more concrete information before posting. The video of my range session is only 20 seconds and it doesn't really show anything dramatic... just the front end of the can launching 50 yards down range. I was shooting steel at 200 and you can hear that impact as well which is why I know it was not a baffle strike.

It chaps my ass every time I get a notification on this thread because my paperwork was submitted on my scythe ti two weeks before this thread started. I've had no issues but still. I'm still leaning toward a UM or Stealth Additive Works can next.

I reached out to SilencerCo to express some concern around my Scythe-Ti and inquire whether or not a formal recall or buyback program was being considered. They deffered to gaslighting, essentially telling me the can had zero problems and that instances of failure noted in threads such as this were not replicatable in their extensive testing in house... I'd advise against purchasing from SilencerCo moving forward, I certaintly won't.

I was deadset on the Raptor 8 last year, even had one in my cart for a hot minute back in early 2024 when it even came with a free tax stamp promotion on silencershop. Ultimately got lured into the shiney, new Scythe-Ti and pivoted last minute. Sure made the wrong decision there!!

I told my wife at dinner on Tuesday that I had to go into town the next day to submit a form 4 for the OG.

She said "so how many suppressors do you have?"

I said "well, 2 of them are going to blow up, so..."

She said "oh yeah, you mentioned that" and moved on.

I'm still not passing judgement. Maybe they can make this right. Maybe they can convince me that they have a solution. I'm open to that. Will I get back a can with obviously better welds? I don't know. I'm irritated that this happened twice and without some notable difference from last time, I'll never trust it again, but I'm not ready to give up yet. They treated me right the first time and I understand that crap can happen. The truth is, there isn't a can that is this light and works this well for the money so I want it to work. I'll see what happens
