Anyone have a good understanding of Canadian Rifle limitations. I tried googling it and now I'm more confused than when I started.

I'm going to Canada spring of 2026 to hunt black bears over bait. My first thought was bow, then the guide told me some of the stands are 80 yards from the bait. So naturally I thought of a suppressed .300 blackout AR pistol, but we all know that wont fly in Canada.

Now I am considering buying a Sig Cross, Ive always wanted one anyway.
But I cannot determine if it is legal in Canada... There is a barrel length restriction as well as some issue with folding stocks. Some resources say 18" some say 18.5" some say 16"... I'm confused.

Anyone know the answer here?

While I’m not an expert I did ask some Canadians on a Canada gun owners Reddit and they say they hunt with them and are legal up there

But to be safe I would call the Canadian border agents number you can find when googling how to cross into Canada with a gun

hello,

it is legal to use for us at it is non restricted. but instead of CBSA the better way i is to contact the canadian firearms center and ask them if the FRT is still valid and for what lenght of barrel and total lenght. maybe there is some variation between the models you can get in usa and the ones sold over here.

i have rifle or shotgun way shorter than 16 barrel lenght and still non restricted (still have one that will be considered in the days a class 3 in usa but non restricted here) but it was because they came from the factory like that not transformed even by a skilled gunsmith.

I have traveled to Canada from the US multiple times and the form says 18.5" or less is a restricted firearm. Here is a link: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://rcmp.ca/sites/default/files/doc/5589e.pdf

Contact the proper folks, ask them if the Sig Cross (with all associated specifics such as barrel length and cartridge) is legal, and get the response in writing.

I personally would not rely upon the “some dude on the internet said…” defense in a court of law, let alone one in a different country.

Absolutely. I i'm just trying to sort through all the online information from Canada... some say 16 inches, some say 18.5.
You are right get it in writing. Perfect.

They have sold the 16 inch and 18 inch versions up here since the gun was released, kelly

we have firearms available that have less than that on barrel lenght that are not restricted here. it is way more complicated than that.

https://dlaskarms.com/product/remington-870-shorty-8-5/ that one is non restricted and that one neither ...

the best way as said earlier with the link given by @AZ_Hunter_2000 hunter on top of that is to check with them what is allowed and of course that in written with a name and a contact. and get the FRT number related to the firearms as some might be way different thant the one offered in usa ...
