Shrek's Trek 2014

Yes. Keep sticking it out and bust your tail getting it done now. Don't put it off until next year. The elk are going to be up and moving when the break in the weather finally happens.
I'm stuck here in GA and wish I was there with you with busted up feet and freezing cold. Living the dream man, living the dream! Go get one and start taking some pictures with that camera!!!

I have my iPhone camera and I found my TG3 also. I had stuck it in a side compartment of my duffle bag and put a regs booklet over it. When I patted the side the booklet kept me from feeling it. Found the camera when I changed areas and checked the regs.

Post up some pics bro!!!!

Maybe a selfie of you with a frozen snot sickle or something!

Persevere!!!!!

Elk hunters aren't stopped by weather. Decide if you want to be an elk hunter.

btw To those who suggest still hunting to stay warm. You won't if you truly still hunt. You won't stay any warmer than sitting.

Shrek, keep it up and go get one---you'll be warm dragging it out........
Check your PM box also.

Bar, I think you make a valid point. I tend to hunt by moving from pocket to pocket, (glassing whenever possible), and then still hunting the pockets. There is a lot more uptempo movement than just still hunting alone entails. I stay warmer than if I just picked one long ridge to spend my day on. I also don't slow down too much in the pockets until I'm into freshish elk sign, then the tempo goes to a snails pace.

I agree that I move fast between areas, but we aren't still hunting until we get to the slow stage, because that's when we're actually hunting.

Either way I'm feeling like I can get out with the weather today. I just walked to breakfast and it was ok. My mind is adjusting what is tolerable.

I only have one regret this year and that's wrecking my feet and legs on opening day. It really set me back and killed a week almost. Left heel is still slowing me down. I had the hind quarter of a bull in the scope 3.5 miles by foot from the road so I was there. Only needed a second and the story is complete. Not completely done but in my mind I'm wrapping it up and planning next year.

You need to wrap your head around the fact that an elk hunt is much more a marathon than a sprint. I've seen too many guys blow themselves up after a few days and then they are toast for the remainder of the trip.

Don't burn your body or your mind out, and don't let them get burned out. Find a pace you can function at and then perservere.

Can I call it semi-still hunting? If he's hunting where I think he is, there's lots of douglas fir forest with a pretty open understory. You don't need to "still hunt" it in the true sense of eastern whitetail hunting, but if you are going slow enough to hunt it effectively he'll still stay warmer than sitting.

I'm writing a book on still hunting. So, I can get a little picky about it's meaning. ;)

I thought eastern whitetail hunters sat in tree stands?

Elk are close by Shrek. I put some to bed tonight. With any luck we will will slip you in above them in the morning. Fingers crossed and sleep tight.

Jeff

It was absolutely brutal out there today ! My hunters are from Texas and I'm sure felt like Shrek.

It was cold. I left the truck at 6:00am and it was -14 in the LBs. When I returned to the truck at 4 it was -4.

I think that is about all my feet can take when wearing those Cevedales. If I walked and worked real slow my feet got too cold. Had to move at a good pace to keep them warm.

But, did not see a single elk, or elk track, even with the fresh snow! I think I hiked around 10+ miles. Several saddles and ridges draws etc.

Good Luck Shrek!!

Some of the most successful whitetail hunters around my area of Alabama still hunt. It's not as common in the midwest (at least where I've hunted), but it's done a lot down here.

Just a little sarcasm. It seems when I ask a tree hunter if they ever tried to still hunt they say it's impossible, because the brush is too thick. :)

It was -26 with 35mph winds on this hunt when my college roommates and I went out and got my roommate on the left in this pic his first bull. If you can bear it keep at it, it will pay off! Stay out until your eyelashes freeze closed and you can't see! Left you a message by the way.

I'm hoping it comes together tomorrow. I'm not coping well with the cold or idleness. Ate a whole jumbo pizza and drank too much tonight. It's getting to me when I stuff my face and drink. I'll give it a couple more days and then I got to get back home and into routine. I've been at this I one form or another since the 15th of October when I stopped working and rushed the rifle load and then left town. Truck is having issues , funds are running short enought to start worrying , and I'm burning out. Elk or not I've had a heck of a great trip. Rokslide has a bunch of super people and I've had the pleasure of meeting some on this trip.

hang in there neighbor. warm weather awaits you so the boys can thaw out and get back into proper alignment........

hang in there Shrek, with 18,500+ views there are a lot of people on Rokslide pulling for you! Remember, you are creating memories that you will relive and talk about the rest of your life. As with any in life, the harder you have to work at something, the more you will cherish it! Good Luck!
