Shoot2Hunt University

Haha. Nothing.

For the most part it would just make it harder to unlearn when they show up. If I had my way, people would go shoot some USPSA matches to learn decent gun handling, cause hunters by and large are awful at it.

That actually makes complete sense, in making it harder to unlearn stuff. If you have any decent online stuff you could point towards that is in-line with your training though, with fundamentals, etc, it would be much appreciated.

There really isn’t much man. Actually the best overall is Thomas’s stuff on YouTube. Watch the videos starting at the beginning. His channel is THLR.no.

Understood, and thank you. Will be digging into that a lot more.

If you are going to S2H, don’t try to learn before the class. Likely will be wrong and you’ll fall behind the class while you try to un-learn what you taught yourself

Still waiting for that 600-1000 class to be offered :)

Yeah, I absolutely hear what you're saying, and it's totally true. The problem is, 2026 classes are full, and I don't want to wait a year and a half to get training and experience under my belt on this.

If you want to attend a class, let me know. I will have them open a slot for you.

Hell yes, thank you. I'll have to look at the dates as there's some family and business stuff this June I'll need to either re-arrange or schedule around, which is why I didn't sign up months ago. But between really not wanting to wait another year, and some things shifting, that's something I'll jump on. Will get back to you on which one would work best. Thanks again.

Has anyone shown up essentially a brand spankin new shooter?

i.e
A 12 year old kid whose parent has taught them safety, but doesn't want to create bad habits with their own poor instruction.

Adult onset hunter guy/gal

O

Yep. A couple.

We had a young man, probably 15 years old and minimal shooting/hunting experience in one of the classes I attended. IIRC, he was also left handed but had been using right handed rifles up to that point. His growth during the class was impressive once he got some good fundamentals and a left handed rifle.

I would have killed for that experience as a young shooter and it would have greatly helped me prevent flinching and other bad habits.

In another course there was a shooter who IIRC, was left eye dominant but had been shooting with his right eye so he could use right handed rifles all his life. He was essentially a new shooter when he decided to use a left handed rifle. He also made impressive progress during the week.

As Form has said above, the biggest hindrance to progress is unlearning bad habits, especially those related to safe gun handling. Coming in naive or with minimal experience is probably an advantage, both in the course and for the rest of that person’s life.

It would be ideal, for sure. I can also see a classmate or instructor (preconceived) perspective where that would hold others back.

My niece turns 12 this summer and can start hunting in CO, and my old boss has a bunch of elk acres but has never shot the rifle he bought. He actually has a valid cow tag through January.

Cindy came back so much better of a shooter, it's a dumb thing for me to just tell them to go to the class.

There's also Thomas's dedicated instructional video that you can pay a small amount to have access to ... although last time I commented on it here, he said he hadn't looked at it in years ...

FWIW, the main LR teacher here suggests people watch all of Thomas's stuff before attending a class ...
