I picked mine up from Cabelas yesterday!
First impressions - My UL is a grey stock 300WSM. Out of the box it had a wierd rattle in the rear of the action. I disassembled the stock and action and found an "extra" pillar piece rattling around. Unless someone can tell me it belongs in there, I'll leave it out.

Whole rifle as delivered weighs 6 lb 3.2oz.
Empty stock with bottom "metal" is 1 lb 13.5oz
Barreled action with action screws was 4lb 3.1oz. (You can see the pillar piece in the pic)
Empty Magazine was 2.5oz.

Reassembled without the surplus pillar piece and no more rattle. Bolt is smooth if you're straight, but any torque off center and it binds up bad. Heavy bolt lift once the trigger has been pulled. Hopefully that settles in with firing and some bolt polishing.
Stock is horribly soft in the front. Easy to flex side to side or up into the barrel.

300 WSM barrel has the custom taper and has .750" measurement at the muzzle.

Materials for scope mounting on order and found some ammo online. Ordered a TI Pro 1 brake. I may actually get to elk hunt with it for late season cow hunt.

Hoping to be about 7.5 lbs scopes with Talley lightweight rings and vortex razor lht. I’ll get photos and updated weight of it mounted up.


Would love to get it to 7lbs by going to a CF, blind magazine but not much in terms of options for lightweight stocks. 1/2 lb really isn’t a ton, it’s more of a I want to than a need to. Can’t leave anything alone. Cars, guns, etc.

I spoke with mpi and they’ll build a stock that would probably shave that 9.5oz but would be $875 with it fit, installed, and finished. While not unreasonable for what it is, I need to remind myself going this route was supposed to save me a little $.

I bought my 6.5CM Ultralight over a year ago and haven’t really done anything with it. I glass bedded the stock which did seem to help stiffen it up some also added some weight to it. I will put it on the scale tonight and see what it weighs bare rifle being bedded now. I still need to pick up an optic for it. Probably go with the VX3 HD to try and keep it lighter weight.

Just weighed my Ultralight and with bedding it and having my direct thread mount for my suppressor on it I was at 6 lb 8 oz.

I have to say the new Savage stocks are SUCH an improvement over their old stocks. They fit me so well and soak up recoil like mad.

they are very good with recoil for sure... very soft shooting rifles

i have an xlr element 4.0 (magnesium) on order, have a swfa 3-9X on it (medium talleys) and APA gen 3 little bastard ordered, as well as a timney (not an accutrigger fan) i like the rifle a lot, this was my second season hunting with it, and the work i'm doing to it is because a lot of people i take hunting use that rifle, so i want to make it fit everyone, and very easy to shoot... didn't want to brake it, but my daughter is going to kill a few critters this year, and i want zero recoil for her... i'm hoping POI doesn't change with the brake so i can take it off and on whenever... we'll see. hope to put a can on it next year. it's a cool little rifle, and has been great so far... it has soaked up more funds than i initially planned on, but i like it, so figured it was a decent place to spend money, and make it easy for young/small shooters to use, while still being a fairly light setup

I think you will love the APA gen 3 LB on it. I have that on my ultralight 6.5 CM and my 12 year old drives tacks with it. I've been very pleased with this rifle.

excellent! did you remove any of the set screws on the top of the brake? my 12yr old daughter is the driving force behind the brake, she wants to hunt this year, and i want it as easy as possible to shoot for her. this may be the worst state in the west for speed goats, but between my wife and i, i think we could pull 3 doe tags this year (or i could wait another 8-12yrs to hunt a buck in a marginal unit) and i think that will be a fun hunt to get her started (and i love pronghorn meat) and she can shoot mine too (mentor program) and i think that experience will have far more value than me waiting for a buck tag... we are planning to move to WY in a few years, so i'll have plenty of opportunity to hunt speed goats then.... i'll get a blacktail tag for her too. i like the rifle stock, but i think it will be a more practical tool pretty soon.

Been following this thread for some time and eventually purchased an Ultralight in 300 WSM in early 2022. It will be purposed for a late season '22 Colorado elk hunt. First outing with the rifle it shot Nosler Trophy Grade 180GR Accubond ammo sub MOA. Had time to walk it out 650 yards and the Strelok Pro app tracked adjustments perfectly after plugging in chrono avg. Hard to beat.

Like several other folks here I share the mindset of "upgrading" my the stock for aesthetic reasons only.

-Manners no longer producing the "mini chassis" required to drop in their stocks.
-Mesa Precision said they are not producing savage drop ins.
-Magpul stated that they did not have the specs on the proof barrel for their Hunter 110 Savage line that are "available early 2022"
-I am in conversation with Bell and Carlson regarding further specifications on measurements of action screws.

Anyone else found alternatives for light weight hunting style stocks that do not involve gunsmithing?

If you are not against a chassis I would suggest the MDT HNT26. They are $$ but they are top notch.

I did not mess with the screws on top because my 12 year old was driving tacks with it. I haven’t been behind it as much as him, so probably won’t mess with the screws until I go back to shooting it more.

As long as it remains reliable, I’ll be happy with it. Got rid of the acu trigger, which I just don’t like, and when my chassis arrives, it should be a pretty solid rifle for what I need it for.

The new carbon howa looks like a better package all in all, and I may get one down the road

I think the next firearm on the list is the new CZ 600 alpha in .223… fast twist and usable stock
