Here's a question... Is it better to max out 5-6 sets with significant (5-10-20+ minutes) periods of rest or to hit those 5-6 sets with minimal resting periods while pushing to muscle fatigue every set??

Mike

I guess I'm approaching it a little different. The way my workout program goes is similar to a running program. Where I have a CHI, LSD, and a INT (continuous high intensity, long slow distance, interval) workout. I basically do three days on, one day off, however for my push-up challenge training I modified it so its 1 day on 2 days off but I still go in this order...

CHI- 3 minutes as many as I can do
LSD- small sets of 20-25 longer break times but high volume over 45 min -hr (whenever my wife get off the treadmill).
INT - 5 sets as many as I can do in 45 seconds each set.

That said, I don't think you can go wrong with any program that has been mentioned on this thread as long as you stick with it. You do need rest though. I bet after you rest up or taper the last week you see a marked difference, and your reps go up. I haven't really seen/felt any improvement either but I know if I keep plugging away it will show up at the end. Either way this is a great way to break up the boredom of January/February. Good luck!

Having a right coronary artery stent placed on 01/20/2014 precludes me from being able to participate in the festivities until cleared by my Cardiologist.:(

Thanks, I am.
Have an appointment next week with the Cardiologist to see about getting cleared to get back in the gym, and a few other things.

Curious about the rules.

Push-ups must be done without stopping. But it's okay to lift a hand off the ground.

How does one continue doing push-ups with out stopping if you lift a hand off the ground?

Does stopping mean quitting and standing up or kneeling, but staying in the plank position to catch your breath is okay?

I always understood a push-up with proper form required a full range of motion with a lockout? 3/4 push-ups can achieve a hella high tally comparatively

You are correct about the lockout. Since the contest is "military rules", you must have your shoulder blades and elbows parallel to the ground on the down motion and lock out your elbows in the up position.

That's how I understood it. I think as long as you maintain the plank position you can rest as long as you want, and if you feel it's necessary you can lift an arm to shake out a shoulder, but this must be done while in the plank position. That's my interpretation, although shaking an arm out isn't really going to do much.

Once your knees hit the ground you're done.

We all know what a push up is, guys shouldn't be trying to skate by with questionable reps, but hey maybe someone wants a new sleeping bag that much.

And all reps should be as armyjoe said, shoulder to elbow parallel with the ground and full lock out at the top.
