Hey all. I'm looking for a new rifle. Cant decide what I'm even interested in. Whether big bore or smaller. Kinda thinking maybe a old school round. Idk. Anyone here mess around with old rounds?

it helps to know what you want it for, big game ,predators and such.

If looking for something to do it all a .270 might fit your needs .

with good shot placement , it will kill any animal on this planet. IMHO it is a bit big for predators but will do in a pinch.

I know many are of the, better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it, mantra ,concerning calibers.
I am not one of them. pick a caliber ,learn to shoot it well and it will perform well for you.

I was at the range the other day talking to an old man, had him an 8x50 Lebel. It was the first smokeless cartridge adopted, 1886’ish. 200 gr around 24-2500. Kinda tweaked my interest just for fun.

I have yet to be begin to procrastinate.

Since you mentioned old cartridges, and possibly big bore, I’ll through out .45-70. One of my favorite cartridges to load for and shoot. A wide range of bullet weights and pressure levels means that it can be really versatile within its range limitations! If you already have a good bolt action hunting set up, adding a 45-70 can nicely handle more specialized, short range hunts.

if you are loaded and have the class to match, find an original Mauser magnum action, call Lon Paul and have him build you a Rigby .350 Magnum. If you are REALLY classy, make that action the slant box version.

I'll second the 45-70 and add the 444marlin to the mix with a side of 35 whelan and for dessert a helping of 38-55

+1 on the 7x57. It can handle the lightweight and the heavy 7mm bullets while not punishing you with recoil.

Not sure what your budget is, but here's a few rifles on my short list.

Uberti 1876 in 50-95 Link - Old school big bore lever action. Built like a tank & ammo is around $4-5 a shot.

Winchester 1895 in 405 Win - Link - Theodore Roosevelt's "Medicine Gun for lions", also chambered in 7.62x54, 303 British, 30 Army, 279 Win, 30-06, 35 Win, 38-72 Win, & 40-72 Win.

250-3000 Savage - Classic deer cartridge that hit the 3000 fps back in 1915. Link

38-55 - can use an older lever action and have it converted by J.E.S. Reboring

9.3x62 - Also a sweet cartridge mentioned earlier. I always keep an eye out for an old Husqvarna to pop up in this cartridge. It was created to fit a standard length action & handle African game for African settlers who couldn't afford the larger action magnums or double rifles.

I use a 300 WSM for all big game. It works great on small critters like antelope all the way up to tough animals like mtn goat and elk. I use 150 grain nosler partitions for everything. Mine is in Sako Finnlight. It is super light for hauling up and down sheep and mtn goat peaks and hardly kicks any harder than my 270. Not bad for a 30 caliber! Sako is made in Finland and is relatively expensive for the quality. When I was looking I would have picked Tikka if I wouldn't have bought it in Sako. Tikka is a chunk cheaper and generally gets rave reviews.

Hard to beat the all American 30/30. So many options from working man’s lever guns to high end customs and vintage special order customs that are worth as much as a new truck. Also lots of cool bolt, pump, semi auto and single shots out there.

An open sighted Rigby or Oberndorf pattern Mauser in .275 Rigby/7X57 is hard to beat for fun and nostalgia. Talk about a been there done that rifle and cartridge combo.

Another incredible gun and cartridge is a Sedgley 30/06. Classy, affordable and proven. Another been there done that rig.

Tough to beat an old '99 in .300 savage!

Pre 64 model 70, this is a Featherweight 30-06. Colonel Towsend Whelen said that the 30-06 is never a mistake I'd like to have one in one of the rarer calibers, maybe .257 Roberts.

The Savage 99 in .300 Savage really interests me, that rifle would be perfect where I was hunting today.

I’m a big fan of the 375HH. After using one on a moose I probably won’t use anything else for moose hunting.

Not real old, but fun combos:
Browning or Winchester 71 in .348 Winchester.
Savage 99 in any cartridge they chambered, I have one in .308 and one in .284. Want one in .358 Win.
Winchester 88 in .308, .284, .243.

Could go northeast woods rifle and find a Remington Pump 76/7600 in .35 Whelen (I've also seen them converted to 9.3X62).

Just a few thoughts on more unique, but very functional rifles.

If you want something old and fairly inexpensive, sporterized springfields can usually be picked up pretty cheap, and can be quite fun.
