Anybody regretted getting your barrel fluted? Did it negatively affect accuracy?

Anybody not regret getting your barrel fluted and wish you would have done it sooner?

Would any of you flute a barrel to save a bit of weight if it is a really good shooter but is a little thicker than most spotter contours?

If it's a good stress relieved barrel then no it'd be super rare to effect accuracy, I'd also recommend Kampfeld Customs Karl does great work

Definitely use kampfields. He's great to work with and does a really good job. I was disappointed with a bolt I had done at LRI.

Good to hear. I’ve heard good things about Kampfield and LRI.

What was disappointing about the bolt that LRI fluted for you?

It was the most superficially thin fluting I've ever seen. I've seen some of the ones done by kampfield on other Tikka bolt and their significantly deeper.

Had some fluting that was super sharp. I never really liked it because of that. Wiping it down would tear shop towels and it just seemed like it should be smoother.

I never even considered that the flutes may be sharp. Were the flutes spiral or straight? What shop or gunsmith did the flutes for the rifle?

I don’t know who did the fluting on the one I had but it was spiral. It’s not like it would cut you, just noticeable sharp edges. Most factory fluted guns are very smooth. Just a good question to maybe ask when you pick a smith. I don’t know the process behind it but I’m sure some have it down better than others.

Thanks. I will certainly be be sure to note this when deciding on or talking to the gunsmith. So far it seems like Kampfield the the way to go.

I regretted spending the money on fluting because it was a result of buying a Remington Magnum contoured Rock Creek that was a bit heavy. Most of my builds have been #2 sporter contours with one mtn rifle contour and weight has been very good.

Order a slighter contour and save the money on contouring is the direction I went.

Iv got a bartlein 4 fluted by LRI in their wrought iron pattern, fairly aggressive in 30 cal.

It’s one of the best shooting barrels I have ever owned. Right up there with my 6 and 6.5mm MTU contoured barrels.

What is the weight reduction, 2-3 oz?

I like fluted bolts and barrels, I've had a bunch done over the years and Karl has done them all. Never had any issues with accuracy once fluted by Karl - he is the master when it comes to anything to do with fluting bolts or barrels or really anything gun related. He also builds really nice rifles.

Thank you as I always appreciate another perspective. However, the his would be for a factory rifle, not a build.

Do you know how much weight was saved?

I’m assuming about that much. I’d probably cut at least two inches off as well.

I don’t know how much was saved. But I would not flute a factory barrel.

As noted above I’d only flute a high quality properly stress relieved barrel. Not to say a factory barrel can’t be, but there’s a reason a factory rifle dosnt cost what a custom does.

Burn it up and flute the next one0396A0D3-0723-4552-99F2-BE0F6F4B6A44.jpeg

If you choose to have it done, I’ll echo what others have posted regarding the workmanship of Kampfeld Customs. First class workmanship and operation.
