Threading “Thin Contour” or “Tikka Lite Contour”Barrels 5/8-24. Flutes Are Welcome!

Kampfeld is your guy. When he says 8 weeks, it’ll be done right, and more than likely back to you, in 8 weeks.
I used a local smith for a simple cut and thread and sent a tikka barrel to kampfeld to be cut and threaded with the flare installed. Local guy said 2 weeks, I received the barrel back from kampfeld 3 days ahead of the barrel from the local smith. Local smith cut my barrel an inch shorter than we agreed in writing and tried to charge more than we had agreed because he “had to deal with flutes “
All my barrels go to kampfeld now.

Ok I think you’ve got me convinced. Who do you use for shipping? I haven’t shipped a gun in years I just started using my Ffl for selling and shipping guns but I don’t really need to for this

You don’t need to go through an FFL. Go get a shipping box, take the trigger and bolt catch off. Wrap it good - ship through pirate ship. Have UPS pick it up at your residence.

Karl will ship right back to your house.

Not taking away from the info you are providing but as an additional perspective: On my 6mm and lower calibers I just thread them 1/2" if they don't have the diameter needed and use an adapter. My thought basis on that is there are various 556/6mm cans that are offered in 1/2" so it just leaves me versatility.

Yeah the thread longer and thread on a piece that is loctite (or such) in place (likely turned hard against the end of the threads also) and then contoured and a square shoulder cut.
What adapter is that?

I just shipped usps. I had the barrel pulled off the action though. I don’t know the letter of the law, but I believe it’s perfectly legal to ship a gun to a smith and for him to ship it back without involving an FFL. You’re not “transferring” anything, just having it repaired/modified. Assuming this is a tikka, I’d take the bolt out, bolt stop and pin/spring out and remove the trigger group before shipping. I told my local USPS that I was shipping a steel tube.

For those that are nervous you will get “caught” at your USPS facility….you do NOT have to declare what’s inside (ie; “a steel tube”). Just say no to lithium battery, perfume, blah blah blah on the screen and be on your way. Or have them pick it up at your house as earlier suggested.

Yes, perfectly legal that way. Just don’t lie to them. If they tell you they can’t do it, point them to chapter 43 of their own regulations.

What paint job did you order?
I just gave them a base color H code and told them I want Blaze Orange Accents.

I’ve had 3 done that way with different base colors and the orange accents have been implemented in 3 different ways.

This one was H-213 as the base color.

If anyone knows of a good smith in northern Colorado let me know. I checked with Kampfield and he’s 8 weeks out I’d like to have it done so I can keep shooting all winter and not have the added expense of shipping back and forth.
Not in northern Colorado, but I’ve had three barrels done by Crown Ridge in eastern Washington. Great work every time. Just mark your barrel with tape where you want it cut. Delivery took a couple days with UPS, no stress. Each barrel spent less than 1 week in their shop.
