It seems the most dangerous spot is at the trailhead. Thieves can grab and go and that's where an interaction is most likely to occur.

Too bad there isn't a way to have a hidden camera/trailcam that might capture the license plate of the person who breaks into your car.

I would be sharing that on every local Facebook group you can get access to.
I dont do facebook, but somebody from the hunting-washington forum posted it on a washington facebook hunting page, so the pics are getting seen. Im sure theyll be recognized by somebody. Hopefully every one of their friends, family and coworkers ends up finding out what low life thieves they are.

I hang a big sign inside my truck that says, "I am possibly watching you right now. I am carrying a high power rifle and am an excellent shot." Not sure it has done anything to prevent theft. Probably just not that many thieves out there. But it makes me feel good.

I also set up two game cams if the truck will sit a while.

My son and I were in the Gila in 2000 scouting (unarmed) for mule deer. It was two days before the opener.
We were returning in the dark from a day long hike about a mile from our RV when we saw poachers spotlighting around the bend.
We heard shots, yells etc. They kept it up and idled toward us, unaware of our presence. My son and I hid in the woods behind a huge fallen pine log and literally watched the light scan over that log with us behind it.
I feared that if I rebuked the lowlifes they would kill us. When they finally passed, we ran back to our camper. We reported the incident the next day.

I hate thieves that steal anything. My sons have had their cars broken into for change and a couple of CDs. Replacing the windows the thieves broke was more expensive then what they lost.

I hate f'ing thieves!
I was standing at my kitchen window last week drinking my coffee and enjoying my morning when I watch a car pull around our private drive and stop in front of my house. A woman gets out and comes up the walkway right toward where I'm standing. She can't see me some how and I had no idea the delivery guy left some packages sitting on the recycling bin outside the laundry room door right under the window I'm looking out (not the normal spot for deliveries). She was five feet away from me when I realized what was happening. I ripped open the window and screamed at her to put the mother f'ing shit down and she sprinted to her car and sped away with our packages. She had no idea I was there and I know I scared the daylights out of her. I ran out the door but didn't get the plates.

PORCH PIRATES!!!

Austink47: Would you be OK posting where you were? I'm up that way often and though no trailhead is safe I would like to know where thieves are snooping around. You could PM me as well if its better.

Huckleberry Hound: I don't know how far out your cameras are but those two probably didn't just happen by your cameras while out hiking. They aren't wearing packs and they look like they knew your gear was there and went out to get it. They look like hunters protecting their spot to me. If either of them has seen that image then they now know where another camera is. Be careful brother.

I'm going to bring my wireless trailcams and place then watching my vehicle and hopefully I'll at least be able to catch the thieves stealing my stuff.

Good idea. I still fantasize about laying up in the bushes with a couple buddies and waiting for someone to try and break into my truck again. But for the most part I have replaced my gear and am over it.

I’d be pretty upset if I had to deal with that.. Fortunately for me, I haven’t had to deal with people like that yet

Anyone else just leave the truck unlocked when hunting? with nothing in it, of course. I don't leave anything valuable in the truck but don't want the windows broken for them to find out.

In the rural area where I live there has been a series of vehicle break-ins and porch package thefts. Many of these are caught on surveillance video or porch cameras then posted online. The thieves wear hoodies and covid masks, they know they are being filmed but still have never been caught. In one video they looked up at the camera and then opened all the porch packages to see if there was anything they wanted.

Best advice to avoid home vehicle break-ins is not a camera but put your vehicle in the garage.

Question is:

Do you have a bunch of "ego stickers" advertising all the great stuff you own festooned all over your truck window? Makes a great shopping list for a tweaker

Are your windows tinted?

JL
On my last truck I had a single stone glacier sticker - not for bragging rights, but for someone pulling up to the trailhead wondering if I'm a hunter or hiker.

Otherwise, I completely agree with you. I see far too many trucks with sitka/first lite/gun brands/hunting lifestyle stickers/fishing stuff. Its like a giant "break into this one" sign... even if nothing is visible, thieves aren't entirely stupid, they're gonna break in anyway to see if you left anything. Lots of these guys have guns in the center console I'm sure, or tucked under a seat. I'm not saying it completely removes the risk, but if they're walking by, see no indicators of valuables on the truck and see nothing obvious, chances are they'll check the doors and move on(if in a parking lot).
That's why I drive a subaru...no way I would have thousands of dollars in guns, bows, optics and hunting gear in that! Lol
Maybe not guns, bows, optics or hunting gear, but those are a favorite of hikers with lots of expensive gear so you're not out of the woods with that. Honestly, at a trailhead overnight the only thing you can do is remove everything valuable from the vehicle. The people who come through late at night would probably go ahead and break in because no ones around and they're already smashing everyone else's windows anyhow.

One group of people around here were breaking into vehicles at trailheads, getting the home address off of the registration/insurance cards in the glove box, taking garage door openers if they were out, and then immediately going to their houses and breaking in.

Right now the striped bass are in the river in the Philidelphia area . People are parking their cars along the river and they are getting broken into. This has become such a big problem that the police department recommended leaving your car unlocked and nothing inside. Crazy
