Thinking of adding a break to my 300 win mag for the range. This way I could reduce recoil and hopefully any associated bad habits while practicing. I could also wear double hearing protection to deal with the added db of increased muzzle blast. When I hunt since the is no recoil when I shoot (at least I never feel it) I would remove the break and put on the thread protectors. My question is how much does this change the point of impact?

Anywhere from 'not at all' to 'considerably'
You'll have to try it on your rifle to really know.
I've only had 2 braked rifles. One of them had virtually no impact shift, the other was about 8" high-left without the brake.

While technically not a brake, the boss system on my mod 70 will move poi if changed. Will it improve group size? Never tried it. But did have it come loose once and moved poi noticeably. Not a foot or so but more like a half inch to an inch before noticed

Avoid creeping up on the scope when practicing w a brake. The day you shoot without it, it'll bite you. You will feel that recoil.

The other problem with your idea(I think many people do it) is I have found it to change the accuracy node. So with a brake vs without the powder charge may need adjusted. For me that is a pain. I just run the brake.

I have that on/off brake on my Savage 300 win mag. After I shot it with the brake on, I see no reason to ever shoot it with the brake off. There is so much less recoil and its enjoyable to shoot. My son and I shot 80 rounds through it in one afternoon and would have shot more if I had more. We were shooting in t-shirts with no other recoil protection.
