Oregon hunting guide killed by accidental discharge

So, basically what I said is correct and the people who criticized what I said were wrong and should be called out on that.
I agree this certainly can happen to anyone at anytime.

Zap, I think you are a very reasonable person, but in my mind I think the way you said it was incorrect.

You are correct, firearms safety clearly didn't save this guys life. We don't know what level anyone had of firearms safety, you would assume some, but in my state at their age, they could hold a hunting license without basic hunter safety.

So my point being, I think your statement would sit better if it was viewed as failing to follow what they have been taught (hopefully) is the issue. Not that the fact basic firearm handling instructions doesn't save lives.

The point is, basic firearm safety would have saved his life.

Condoms save a lot of headache too, just unfortunately, it seems like people really phuck up some basic things.

This seems like a grammar argument when it should be, as responsible gun owners, that we shouldn't tolerate any amount of negligence in gun handling. That's an issue that can effect us and those around us.

When I set up the triggers on my rifles I make sure I check them by dropping the butt of the rifle directly onto a hard surface from at least 1-2 feet with the safety off. Are you saying a bunch of guys are running around with rifles that are so unsafe that they'll fire from falling over? Ignoring the fact that in that scenario the chamber should be empty and/or the safety should be engaged anyway.
For sure. I also run the bolt hard several times with a completely empty rifle off safe, to ensure that a hard bolt slam won't result in a negligent discharge either. I do both with any new rifle and anytime I adjust any part of the trigger on my rifles.

Terrible tragedy and unfortunately a preventable death. My condolences to the family and affected loved ones.

Exactly. Which is why I said it can happen to anyone at anytime. But the slide experts say I am wrong to say that....I am not to be near guns because I realize that someone else can shoot me when I am.
Don’t drive drunk, passenger doesn’t die. Exert proper muzzle control, guide doesn’t die. Both are very preventable. Both CAN happen, but are very preventable. Call me out all you want.

I do that first and then drop the buttpad into a hard surface after. Especially since I now use a BnA trigger where you can adjust the bottom sear. And for trigger with non-adjustable sears I still do those tests.

I adjust from:

won't cock at all -> cocks but running bolt hard causes slamfires -> safe no matter how hard the bolt is run but dropping buttpad onto hard surface will fire -> safe in both those conditions

I'm on a gun club board and there was a negligent discharge resulting in injury during a "church security team" training about a month and a half ago. The trainer has many credentials from an organization that provides them based on payment rather than merit. He is also a few decades older.

After hearing his take on gun safety and how most rules only apply to new shooters, I'm not surprised to read this shooter was older. I think there's a generation out there that predated Cooper and I get the heck away from them.

I never said you can control anyone else. Obviously (I thought) the person handling the firearms is the one who must exert the proper muzzle discipline and firearms safety for this process to work.
So what I said was corrected more likely than controlling another's actions. Thanks.

Should never happen…insert humans…. It happens. All in all terrible, I’ve been flagged many times by “trained” individuals who you would expect to be above the average gun owner…it doesn’t matter…people suck sometimes

You’re not wrong Walter.

I am saying not everyone is safe. There is a reason many states have laws against leaning rifles on the truck, I'm assuming there have been incidents where the rifle was not on safe and it fired when it fell over, hence the law. I had a guy show me a rifle he was selling, first thing I did was open the action and there was a round chambered. I think that falls under not safe.

Zap,
You are pushing a boulder uphill.

Your statement that you can control nothing and could die at anytime while accurate isnt germane to the conversation.

By that token you should never leave your house or interact with anyone.
what is not germain is you misquoting what I said to try to shame me.
but you are what you are.

@*zap* , someone said basic firearm safety would have prevented this. You said that was incorrect.

Do you believe that if the shooter had utilized basic firearms safety, that the guide would still be alive?

Let me define basic firearm safety as…

1. Muzzle pointed in safe direction
2. Gun unloaded until ready to fire
3. Don’t rely on your guns safety
4. Don’t point a gun at something you don’t wish to destroy
