New truck...revisiting stuff I carry

I got a new truck this year and I'm taking the time to revisit what stuff I carry & keep in my truck. Mostly because I'm bored and it's too hot to do anything else but it needs to be done. I needed to get smaller and more efficient gear in my truck. Something I do all the time with my backpack and hunting gear but hadn't really thought about for my truck. Things I'm changing out from my old truck:

- new, smaller portable air pump. Fits under my back seat. Takes same battery as my portable fans that I use for my hunting dogs. Ryobi.
- tow and reoovery straps. Fewer of them and they fit under my back seat.
- new phone holder on dash. Doesn't move and phone charges in holder while I'm driving. Tired of dead phone or phone flying off passenger seat after I set it down.
- truck has Android Auto so I can look at Onyx maps on truck screen and I don't have to look at my phone when I'm driving around. When I figured that out, I was a happy man.
- re-organizing my tire repair kit, so its smaller and fits under my back seat. Hope I don't need it.
- new receiver hitch pins/locks. Ordered 2 Bolt locks that will use my truck key to lock/unlock. Got rid of two keys off my key chain.
- new 12 ton bottle jack from HF. Fits under my back seat.
- new tire iron. Smaller than my old one and fits under my back seat.
- New flashlights and headlamps to keep in truck. All work off same c cord charger as my phone and laptop. Tired of always having the wrong cord. Now I only need one.
- new electric cooler for drinks and travel food that doesn't require ice packs or ice on long trips. Father's Day gift.

I previously carried and kept emergency and rescue stuff in rubbermaid containers in the bed of my truck. Always in the way and rolling around. Got to the point where it took up too much room and I wouldn't take it on trips...which is also stupid. I am downsizing all the "what if" stuff I take and basically....if it doesn't fit in/under my rear seat storage it's gone.

I ordered a new camper shell and that should show up sometime in August. Got my windows tinted last week(never had that done before) and for the most part, my truck is done and ready for the upcoming season. When I cleaned out my old truck to trade it in, I realized how much crap I was keeping in it, how much room it took up and I found stuff I had forgotten I had laying around. I needed a Spring cleaning, get some smaller stuff that took up less room and get back to carrying just the basic stuff I need to get my truck back into town. I should have done the same with my old truck....but didn't. I think it's a good time of the year to do this kind of stuff. Should make packing for hunting trips easier.

Is the stuff under the backseat secure in the event of a crash?

I wouldn’t want a bottle jack chasing me around the cab if I roll my truck.

Curious on what phone holder you went with? I'm thinking about having one as my cup holder currently serves as the phone holder.

Don’t forget jumper cables, a roll of paper towels, and maybe spare sunglasses or a poncho

I don't carry jumper cables anymore. I have a heavy duty jumper box that I can jump myself with. I have cataracts and I'm having eye surgery on both in August. Will see how the surgery turns out but hopefully I can get rid of my prescription glasses and I'll have to get some new sunglasses or find an old pair laying around. For paper towels, I found a magnetic roll holder at Menards that will attache in the bed of my truck on the side by the tailgate. I'm waiting for my topper to be put on the truck before I get it. I bird hunt a lot. I attached a cutting board on my tail gate so I can clean birds off of it and I go through paper towels.

I got it off Amazon. I used the piece that attaches to a vent on my dash. My old Chevy Colorado vents moved easily so vent attachment didn't work all that well. My Jeep has different type of vents and it doesn't move on the Jeep. Works well.

Yes. It's all contained under my back seat. Nothing is loose.

Yep. Something like this:

interesting

Years back, I cartwheeled a rig in a rather spectacular way. Even the bottle jack bolted to the wall of the cab broke free and pingponged around in there. Will always remember seeing that jack laying on the roof right next to me and wondering where it came from :ROFLMAO:

When I had a truck, I kept everything in a tool box instead of the cab. I felt it was more efficient to retrieve goods and kept me from getting in and out of the truck.
I was essentially doing the same thing with my old truck but I went from hunting out of Suburbans to having a short box in a mid sized truck. I didn't have as much room and I started leaving it out on some trips which wasn't the right solution.

You do have to pack things different, and trim the fat. I've near always had single cab trucks, and mostly toyotas. Think I'm on the 4th or 5th revision of how I haul all my junk in this current rig.

What kind of truck did you get?
I got a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. I had a Chevy Colorado ZR2 diesel but I started having significant and expensive problems with the exhaust/emissions. Price of diesel fuel didn't help either.

The dad of a friend of mine rolled a truck when we were in high school.

He said the Stanley thermos flying around in the cab about beat him to death.

I’d go with a breaker bar with a few common lug sizes or just yours.

You have a great list. I’ve never done the tire plug kit personally but has saved me once hunting. I carry an impact and full set, bottle jack, and some straps. You’re dialing it in and minimizing with rechargeable lights and all. Dig it I need to do a clean out and organize before hunting season

Plug kits are great. Dont even have to pull the tire. I'd keep a hammer handy though. Sometimes they take a thump to get in there.

Looks the wheel torque on that is around 130.

May want something a little longer than the 4 way. IMO.
I have a large 4 way that I've had for years that works well but it's always in the way. I want to take off the lug nut locks that came on my wheels and I'll use the smaller one and see how/if it works. Better to figure that stuff out before you really need it. Thanks.
