yes. The 10,000 hours thing. But really, it takes a lot less time than that to become an expert in something. A work-year is 2080 hours.

2080 hours per year? Ha ha ha I remember my first part time job! I'm in power generation and we're over 3000 hours every year. Money, vacation and stability are good but it's a serious time commitment if you want to be successful.

What did you dream about doing when you were 13-14, and how do you spend most of your spare time? Those are two things you need to pay attention to when looking for a career.

If you just want a job that makes decent money and affords you time off, well there are lots of options there for someone with some common sense and hustle since those two things are in demand these days.
I wanted to be a ninja cop like the bad ass ole Steven Seagal!! Hard to Kill Seagal! And like break arms and just be a bad ass, then life hit and now Im not a ninja cop!lol

What do you specifically do in power generation? I’m in the same field and know very few that get to that many hours. Very very few...

I also feel it doesn’t take a serious commitment to be successful. The bar is set pretty low these days. Save all that energy when you’re off work. I go to work only to take a break from my hobbies. Oh and that money thing we all need haha

Plant operator. Between our regular 12 hr shifts there's always safety meetings and training that we come in on our days off, call ins , scheduled and unscheduled outages, getting held over after shifts. Never ends.

Gotcha. You guys should probably go Union. With the time off, the plant operators here work either 36 or 40 hours a week and around 1800 hours a year and make between 110 to 150k a year

In my area quality employment is almost nonexistent. I'm more than happy with where I live and our household income, definitely not moving to chase money at this point in my life.

Federal law enforcement. You are the perfect age. You can retire at 50 if you have 20 years. With your military you should earn 6 hours of leave per pay period. After 15 years federal service you earn 8 hours per pay period. Some of the best medical insurance that you get to keep when you retire. If you do it right you can retire at 50 and work a consulting gig. I worked in local law enforcement before. I could not go back to that. Those guys live in a fish bowl now. Every thing they say and do is recorded. If I had to start over for some reason I would do something medical, chiropractor or physical therapy or I find something no one wants to do for themself anymore like plumbing or electrical and start my own company. (After the apprenticeship of course, because everytime time I do plumbing or electrical it’s a sh!t show!)

Best of luck to you.

This is my career now. I'm 11 years in with 14 to go for full retirement. I can get out with healthcare for the rest of my life at the ripe old age of 46. Most departments are 20 year minimums for retirement depending on age. Downsides are sleep cancer and for some the time away from family. Guys I work with have missed alot of first and last with the kids. First words steps games are big events that you miss being at the station for 24 or 48 hours.
Yes, but the 8-10 days a month never hurt anyone.
No offense but it's a do nothing job and does have some bad with it but more do nothing than bad for sure

There is a new tech school here that teaches the construction side of the electrical field which is 4 mos. and they help find funding and job placement when finished, you just have to go through the apprentice time and you off and running

Haha yeah 72 hours a week is a total vacation and we don't ever do anything just like you say. Police is a do nothing eat donuts job until they get shot at. Saying no offense before insulting someones career is a super classy move.

That's what I said we don't ever do shit. Watch TV eat steak and workout. Cops eat donuts all day and nurses sit around playing go fish. You should talk to you're buddies and get on easy Street with a fire job

I didn't mean to hurt your feelings but you must admit you don't face a hard day or many bad days a week when working, don't kid yourself there are way more dangerous jobs than the one you have weather you want to admit or not...Try mining for a sample

Get a paramedic license in whatever state you want to be in, get whatever fire credentials area departments require. And work 10 days a month at a job you can walk away from without constant phone calls, emails, etc. my state is 20 year retirement. If you want to chase big city fire jobs it’s competitive but atleast here there is a huge shortage of medics, and most smaller full time departments require paramedic.

I was just saying I can call anything a do nothing job. Saying no offense then saying something bad is useless. Honestly I don't think you have a clue what I do or how often I have a hard day. I'm not critical of whatever job you do yet you feel the need to go at my career. Then you take the high road and say my feels are hurt. Takes alot more than that bud. Let me guess your a miner and u keep this country going. Mining falls under standards just like firefighting does but kids don't say they want to grow up to be miners

Hey KSAD, I'm not going after your job and could really care less what you do for a living but some job are glorified and that's only because of sometimes they really do earn their wages, but most people doing a dangerous job live without any need of a pat on the back while others almost break their arms patting themselves on the back.
Much like when vets returned from Nam were called names, spit on and other things but they pushed on and got over the shit that was dealt to them.
I'm not in this to fight with you and hope you realize your job means something to you and others, I'm glad for you. But not everybody has you guys on a pedestal, even though you think you should be on one.

Dude I didn't say your welcome for my service. You are the one who said I have a do nothing career. I'm not here to fight I'm not here to hijack this dude's thread, but if he's looking into my career I don't want it misrepresented. Idk what the vet reference even means. There are easy days here and there are hard days. I'm not posting anymore on this because this is pointless. You obviously have your opinion of what guys like me are like and that's fine
