The Collegiate Peaks in Colorado. Climbed Mt Princeton this summer (14,197 ft). Have climbed many, but this one kicked my butt! Can't imagine the joy of goat hunting this place.

You guys are definitely peaking my interest. I need to find a critter to hunt down there.

Then bring yourself! We have MILLIONS of whitetail. Most southern states have silly limits (2 bucks a year & 3 does a DAY, here in middle TN.....) But I'll be honest, it's some of the toughest hunting around.
Like, if you're used to spotting critters to stalk, well, good luck with that! A lot of our thick timber, visibility is under 50yds (another reason these hills are a bitch...you can't see where you're going!) & half the time, by the time you see deer (or bear) it's too late.

I can't recall who said it, but someone more educated than me is quoted as saying that 'If you can kill a public land deer in the Eastern Mountains, you can kill a deer anywhere in America'

I've elk hunted a couple of the roughest areas of Colorado and Idaho. I'm not counting the sheep and goat country because that stuff isn't my jam. Absolutely when you get up above tree line or sheer rock faces anywhere that's a whole different game. Yinz have fun up there, I'm good.

A more apples to apples comparison, I'd put the place I deer hunt in West Virginia up against those high country elk/deer mountains any day. Out there in the Rockies sure the magnitude dwarfs the Appalachians, but even the roughest country I've been in have a lot of bowls and broad benches. In Central WV you're lucky to find a bench big enough to lay your pack down without it rolling to the bottom and you're fighting thick brush on 60 degree slopes. Truly miserable country.

How many of these people pushing the West Coast and West Virginia have been in the rugged parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado?

Youll find most with broad experience tout the Rockies as the toughest mountain range.

Born and raised in the state of Virginia. Spent 4 years of my life in the mountains out here, they don’t hold a candle to the Absaroka range.

And Alaska and Canada mountain ranges have some rugged terrain that makes the Frank Church and rough parts of the Rockies seem tame.

I believe what everyone is saying is nasty and hard is different everywhere. Don’t worry we all know Idaho is tough lol your state is well represented here.

Okay. Thats great. My point is that some of these things are not apples to apples. Some mountains do not admit old guys and spit out anyone but the very fit. Those are the nastiest ranges in North America.

There’s a bunch of others that are pretty steep or have dense vegetation or whatever.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, people can represent their part of the continent with their experience and where they find is difficult hunting. This isn’t a whose dick is bigger competition.

I agree. I feel no more desire to participate in this thread. Hope you guys have fun exploring the rugged mountain ranges of Kansas and back east. You can find me in the Frank, Alaska, etc. Haha

Oh no that just might break my heart...... there was nothing negative until you came in here trying to dispute the validity of people’s experiences. Probably could find you just off the trail lol. I wasn’t aware I was in the presence of Jeremiah Johnson himself.

Yeah so if you knew anything about me you would know that I wouldn’t be “just off the trail”. Good try on the assumption though.

I competed in division one athletics. I climb serious mountains off trail.

Your approach to identifying what was supposed to be the toughest mountain ranges in North America is every player gets a trophy. That’s fine. Just don’t get frustrated if I suggest some places are harder than others. Not sure why that set you oft.

If you’d spent some significant time in Hells Canyon, the Frank, the Bob, the Alaskan Range, the Brooks, etc., you’d realize some places are man-eaters and some are just kinda hard. I’m gathering you haven’t.

Good day.

Good day.

I’m sure you have, because you act like it. I figured you’d take that bait. I just don’t like when anyone’s ideals or experiences get down played from people out there like yourself that expect the world to bow down to them. Look at me I’ve been places others haven’t so what anyone else has done doesn’t mean anything. That’s non sense man eaters idgaf, congrats bro you’ve been some places and done some stuff that others haven’t. Had you not disputed other hard working hunter’s experiences I wouldn’t be a dick right now and would have given you your due respect. Everyone gets a trophy...hardly. My whole young adult life has been competing, so much so that yes I come on here for the camrarderie not competition. Your also correct the only rugged range I have under my belt currently is the San Juan’s, however I got the Sangres this year and the Bob next year. That’s why I started this thread, to learn. I’m originally born and raised from Pennsylvania, so I absolutely defend my eastern brothers who live for this shit too. Haven’t had the amount of time as you have whilst being in the Army. Don’t you worry though give me a couple years and I’ll be all through these places.

I live in Western Washington and hunt central Idaho every year and even though Idaho may be as steep or steeper it is much easier hiking. If you have ever crawled through the sticker and devils club or side hilled on slippery moss covered rocks on a serious grade you would understand. The panhandle region may compare. Where I have been in Alaska it was steep and thick as well.
