Mtn Lion Ban Filed in Colorado

I am trying to submit written testimony against this bill introduction, which everyone of us should do, and I am finding it impossible to do so. Someone chime in and help me here please.

I just read part of a study on mule deer fawn mortality. Of deaths by predation, and there are more than you could imagine, 51% were killed by mountain lions. There are too many here already and current hunting is not taking enough of them. We found a dead fawn and a dead elk calf within hundreds of yards of each other just this season and my money is betting a lion(s) were responsible. The area I hunt us already tough enough and there aren't a lot of ungulates there now. If this measure moves forward and ends up as law, it along with the stupid wolf reintroduction will decimate the population like it has in other states. Talking is great. We need to act!

Oh great, ballot initiatives. It's what killed hound hunting and body gripping traps here in WA. The marshmallows will vote it in, I guarantee.

This is their point man… they want to kill hunting for humans… I agree, but not sure how to stop a ballot initiative other than voting it down or starting a more extreme initiative, like allowing year round cat hunting like Utah
I know they are playing the long game. They want to eliminate hunting, and down the road banning guns is their end goal.

And you are right. We can bitch about it, rant about it, get really pissed about it and in the end the side with the most cash wins. Most of us (me) don't have the dough to make an impact. I hate that it's like this, but it is.

There will be opportunities for public comment in the future once the filing is complete with the Sec of State. Will also be major fundraising effort led by many wildlife conservation orgs to defeat the ballot initiative in Nov 2024. Stay tuned, will update as more comes available. Best thing hunters can do now is tell everyone (friends, family, co-workers) why this hunting ban is a terrible idea.

Earlier today the “Review and Comment” meeting took place for the proposed ballot initiative, currently titled “Prohibit Trophy Hunting,” that eliminates all hunting and trapping of mountain lions, bobcats and federally protected Canada lynx in Colorado.

The review and comments hearing was held between proponents of the measure and Colorado Legislative Counsel staff to ensure the ballot proposal is clear and concise. The council had several concerns, forcing proponents to revise the ballot proposal before it can proceed to the next step. Concerns included the use of the phrase “trophy hunting,” along with several other items.

In this case, proponents of the measure will have to resubmit a revised ballot proposal and go through the review and comment hearing again, unless the council has no additional concerns with the clarity of the new version. If that is the case, the proposal will then be filed with the Secretary of State prior to the Title Board meeting.

During the initial hearing, the legislative council staff asked the proponents if they would like to include an exception to the ban when hunters harvest mountain lions for the purpose of human consumption, since the ban applied to trophy hunting for the primary purpose of harvesting fur, horns, hide, etc. The proponents simply replied "No". I think the proponents of the ban may have received some bad polling projections from Rebecca Niemiec and her Colorado State University "Anti-Hunting Policy Center".

Pretty good clip from HOWL-

Thank you for this well written update. It provides insight into the situation I would not have had otherwise. The question regarding amendment for situation of human consumption was an interesting one.

Yep. I think the proposal title will get challenged further when it comes before the SecState office regarding the use of the words “trophy hunting” in the title but then later described as basically all forms of hunting. It is intentionally misleading.

Proposition 91: Mtn Lion, Lynx, and Bobcat hunting ban had a rehearing before the Secretary of State Title Board on Wednesday. The Title Board removed the term “trophy hunting” from the title and statement clause. They ruled that it was not a fair representation of the true intent of the initiative, which is a ban on all cat hunting. Huge thanks to Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management (CRWM), they were mainly responsible for getting that change made at the title board. I would recommend that any concerned hunters donate to CRWM as they will be leading the campaign to defeat this ballot initiative. Many of the other 501c3 wildlife conservation orgs (CWCP, RMEF, MDF, etc) are throwing their support behind CRWM (501c4) for this fight.

So at what stage is this whole Debacle? Are they gathering the required signatures now?

I believe they can start gathering signatures once title is set. However, there has been a petition to Colorado Supreme Court filed, link below. If the petition is granted they have to vacate those signatures. Honestly gathering the signatures will be no problem. People get all kind of crazy stuff on the ballot in Colorado. It’s not hard, probably could knock it out in a few weekends at Whole Foods. The real battle will be fundraising and media campaign.

Watched the recent CPW meeting, well the portion regarding Mountain Lion regulation changes. The people pushing the ballot measure spoke out against electronic call usage for cat hunting, matter of fact so did the gentleman from CRWM. A whopping 3 cats were killed last year using calls per CPW.

Apparently commissioners have pretty much decided to remove electronic calls as a tool. As someone who lives w mtn lions routinely on my property this is taking a tool away that I might be able to use in case of a problem cat. Instead I will have the option to call CPW, who will then use e calls to target a problem cat….

Consider emailing the commissioners, hunters (aside from CRWM) did not show up to comment, anti hunters did.

Thanks for keeping us informed Bayou, howl out out a good video, and there is a group out of canyon city, I believe who sounds like they are going to spear head the fight, I’ve started donating to them and will throughout the fight. I thinks it’s Coloradans for responsible wildlife management. Go to savethehuntcolorado.com
You nailed it. Because of their 501c4 status CRWM is leading the campaign with the other wildlife conservation organizations supporting them. For concerned hunters (resident and non-resident) who want to know how to help, I would suggest two things:
1) Tell all your friends, colleagues, and family about how mountain lion hunting is necessary for proper wildlife management, strictly managed by wildlife agencies on science-based principles, and provides incredible opportunities for families to source wonderful table fare and maintain a true connection to the food they eat.
2) Support Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management any way you can. They are on the front lines doing the work to defend the future of hunting in Colorado and make no mistake this proposition is completely about removing all types of legal, ethical hunting from wildlife management.

Will be emailing the commissioners about quite few things from the last commission meeting……

Quote feature doesnt seem to be working for me.
@Hnthrdr said "Hell I would love that, but even if we couldn’t get spring bear, if we could open the season Aug 1 that would be a big win"
We had the same issue here in washington. August 1st west side, sept 1st east side. 2 bears per year but only 1 could be from east side. I went to a comission meeting march 2019 and addressed this. West side has berries through october. East side, berries are about toast come september. I gave them my shpiel and they all looked at me like i had 2 heads, theyd never considered it. Anyway a couple months later, they made a proposal to make the bear season august 1st, 2 bear limit, statewide. It passed with flying colors. Go be the squeaky wheel, you never know. But sounds like colorado game dept is suffering the same fate as washington. At the time, the one nay vote was barbara baker who is now the head of the commission. All of the aye votes have been kicked to the curb and replaced by anti hunting activists, and theyre making noise about repealing the change. Future doesnt look bright. But we had a good run. Between august 2019 and august 2023 i killed 10 bears in eastern washington. Makin hay while the sun shines i guess.

Just a matter of time

They tried this last voting session if you remember? Ban on lions, bobcat, and lynx. Look at the women who pushed it last time. Wish they would catch a case of lead poisoning
