"Mountain Rifle Challenge " 2026 May 2nd

If you have two spots left I’d like to join with a buddy.

Edit: any local guys who don’t want to drive, should have two spots to fly out there if your risk takers.

I’d imagine you’d have to have a grip of property to make an endurance/shooting set up unless you did a loop and set it up like a biathlon. Only you have a pack, and shoot further, off your pack or tripod.
Yeah exactly. Ideally I would see it as each participant is given a list of coordinates and at each point is a shooting stage with an RO and then they have to travel to each one - maybe in any order and by whatever route. It would be hard to work out at first but I imagine the penalty for a miss would be steep so that you couldn’t win on speed alone.

Was gonna say, I know just the guy for you, turns out you already know him @abbrown🤣. I’ll man a station and keep the drinks cold. I see no reason you couldn’t run a friendly (off the books) comp on public land.

Alright come on. I think that puts us close to limit for the event. Can do a waiting list if we have others interested

I've been trying to talk him into coming to shoot an NRL hunter with me!

@Bobrobheimer i really liked your idea for a shooting endurance event.

I like the idea of loops similar to the Barkley marathon style.
Then pick the part of the course that offers the most difficult shots, and make that the shooting area.
Set a fixed time limit.
Each lap allows you to shoot for points. Shooting stage should follow NRL rules and scoring.
As many laps as possible to earn points.

So completely possibly for someone to have a blazing fast lap, then miss all targets and get a big 0 for all the effort.

At the end of the event, he with the most points wins.

Yeah we are gonna have to be on it for time management. Likely won’t cross the canyon this year.
I think stopping for a lunch break will help. Last year we just ran out of steam but we had plenty of daylight.

Since we will be doing lunch and dinner what were you thinking? Fend for ourselves with a field lunch or should we plan out who can bring what? I know you probably planned on dinner but we can bring stuff to help out with this many people.

I hadn't considered that method of scoring. I like it, make the endurance component relevant especially if the fixed time limit is generous so that ability to continue for a longtime even if not super fast is rewarded. Personally I'd want to lap distance to be fairly long - 5-10miles. And it would be nice to have enough shooting stages that you don't start repeating them too quickly.
