Did a Google on those guys, they have run some big name faces through there. Good luck and be sure to share what you tag!

Yes Sir. I hunted with them last year....the 3rd week during the big snow storm. Great outfit and lots of Elk.

I notice Go Hunt has draw odds for a non-resident with 0 points at 57% for a general elk tag, this is much lower than previous years, I wonder what Go Hunt knows?
It means that only 57% of people with zero points drew tags. Everyone keeps saying "there were 400 leftover tags in May". Not exactly. Those were people who turned in their general tags after they didn't draw their limited entry permits. There's always a chance in the random part of the draw to get a tag, but odds are well below 100%. Hell, even those with 1 point aren't 100% odds.

Actually GoHunt shows 55% at zero, and 77% with one point. You aren't guaranteed a tag until 2 points. I could draw this year but not sure that's in the finances for me at this point.

As far as stats go, how can go hunt have an accurate stat if Montana doesn't even have accurate stats? Just my thoughts. Apply no matter what the odds are if you want a chance at hunting :)

So when applying for Montana Gen tag, and a LE permit, how does that work? What if you draw your GEN tag and do not draw your LE permit? Can you turn in the GEN combo tag for a refund? If not, would you just wait til you think you have enough points for the LE permit before applying ?

Yes you can turn in the General Tag...Not at a 100% refund though.

How so? Odds for 0 point holders slightly increased from 2018 to 2019, decreased for those that had one point which was 100% in 2018.

2018 - 0 points/1 point
Big Game Combo 51.25% / 100%
Elk Combo 53% / 100%

2019 - 0 points/ 1 point
Big Game Combo - 55% / 77%
Elk Combo - 57% / 75%

MT used bonus points not preference points. Your name goes in the hat more times for the draw rather than allocation based off number of points. No way to know what your odds are.

This is not correct at all. MT uses Preference Points for NR applications for General Tags (Elk Combo, Big Game Combo and Deer Combo). Bonus points are used if you apply for a Limited Entry unit. which are squared. No way to know future odds, but you can absolutely know past odds of both,

If you decided to apply for a permit you will have to select one of the options below:

After applying for Big Game Combination License or Elk Combination License, you must choose the following options if you are not awarded an elk permit in the drawing

- Keep your Big Game or Elk Combination license
- If successful in drawing a Big Game or Elk Combo and unsuccessful in drawing a special elk permit, you can return your combination license and receive an 80% refund
- Turn in the General Elk license portion of your Big Game Combination License and retain the deer, fishing and upland bird license and receive a $315 refund.

perhaps I'm missing something here but if the general tag is based on a true preference point system then how are people with 1 point not drawing and people with 0 points drawing? Would not all 1 point holders get a tag before considering 0 point holders?

Montana awards 25% of the Combination Licenses to those with no Preference Points.

You have to put in for the general tag when you apply for the LE permit. You can check a box on the application where they'll refund your general tag costs if you don't draw your LE permit. That's how there's tags available in May. Demand has outpaced supply for several years. Odds for 0 point holders have dropped steadily over the past few years.

Just based on the number of threads here on Rokslide (first time elk hunt MT) I'd say MT is going to be crowded in September.
I really don't know how it could be any more crowded than any other year they still only have 17,000 non resident tags

If only MT answered all these questions and more in some sort of format that got released every year... Read the regulations, especially if you end up with a tag, outfitted or not, you are responsible for knowing the rules.

Of course there is always a smart ass out there. Even i am sometimes. And sometimes i just want to have a conversation on Rokslide.

Could be guys referring to Archery Elk season being crowded. The elk tag is a rifle tag and for a small Archery fee you can hunt Sept. - Nov. rifle or archery when in season. This could shift the pressure from one part of the season to the next. Non Res pressure is the least of your worries at most trail heads.
