Of course there is always a smart ass out there. Even i am sometimes. And sometimes i just want to have a conversation on Rokslide.
I am only trying to help, if even in a tad of a smart a** way. The amount of misinformation here and very simple things people were getting wrong was concerning, especially considering they will be toting firearms through the woods hunting deer/elk that have a lot of regulations surrounding them that are a little more complex than how they do the general draw (telling the difference between a brow tine bull/spike, what units are general, boundaries, etc). Just asking folks to read the regulations, everyone could benefit.

At this point, my brain is slam full of regulations for the western states. I have been hunting quite a few of them since 2001. Sometimes i just dont want to read them when i know a simple answer is probably available from others. But i appreciate your suggestion.

Several of the answers though are just plain wrong, and all the right ones are on the first 5-10 pages with bullet points in regs 👍 Just asking people if they find themselves with a MT tag this season, try to fit a few more regulations in their brain.

This is not correct at all. MT uses Preference Points for NR applications for General Tags (Elk Combo, Big Game Combo and Deer Combo). Bonus points are used if you apply for a Limited Entry unit. which are squared. No way to know future odds, but you can absolutely know past odds of both,

And he was asking about the permit side so yes bonus points. In some units you can get a pretty good idea, in others not so much. One unit I was considering, someone with 0 points drew a permit. All the applicants with 1, 2, 3, and 4 points did not. So by their odds page you have to better odds with no points.

It is mathematically impossible to have better odds with less points in Bonus Point draw. Simple math, the more chances you have in the draw the higher your odds are of drawing. That is the difference between PP and BP, just because you have more bonus points and thus a higher change statistically of drawing doesn't guarantee that you will draw. In 2019 the only two NR tags in MT's toughest to draw Elk unit went to applicants with 0 Bonus Points, while two max point holders (16) did not draw. This does not mean they had a better chance of drawing, they just got lucky.

If only MT answered all these questions and more in some sort of format that got released every year... Read the regulations, especially if you end up with a tag, outfitted or not, you are responsible for knowing the rules.

Here is a good example. I have just finished scanning the first 46 pages of the regulations. I found how bonus points work, how preference points work , and the fact that MT will refund 100% of license fees due to death, 90% due to immediate family member death and 90% due to other approved circumstances. I found nothing regarding what % of refund is granted, ( if selected) on the GEN license if a permit is not drawn. Can you tell me what page of the regs address this? Its apparently not under "fees & refunds".

You have the option of a 80% refund to return the general tag if you do not draw a permit.
The option for refund is shown when you start the application process.

That is a good point, they also did not include that 25% of NR Big Game Combos are set aside for applicants with 0 points. Both are addressed in the NR Deer and Elk worksheet linked below, makes no sense why this info is not included in regs.

So you will likely lose about 200 bucks or so if you dont draw the permit. I plan to just get points for a couple years anyway. I drew the combo tag in 2018, the first time i applied. I have not applied for a permit, but that is the plan in the future.

I am applying for the first time this year also. MT application processes are confusing. Is a nonresident’s odds better with one preference point or no preference point? I am not trying for a permit, just a general big game license.

I just checked the MFWP website to see if anything was going on with the drawing for nonresident tags. My status had changed from "pending" to drawing in progress. Standing by and hoping.
