Missoula, MT area info

slowelk, sour? Nope, just realistic. Native Montanan that has been in the Root a long time. I understand what is happening here. I'm not concerned about wealthy folks buying big pieces of Montana. At least it wouldn't end up like out on Mullan, a place you mentioned. I work for a large custom hone builder in the Root. We build 1 home every 1 and 1/2 years as opposed to 1 every month or so like the tract builders. Schools? Our district in Corvallis takes a backseat to no other district in the state. Missoula is great if I need to buy something I can't get in the Root. Like they say, Missoula, only 45 minutes from Montana. mtmuley

I live in South Central MT and have to say Missoula is a great place. Seems somehow more grounded than Bozeman, less touristy/trendy. I'm there several times a year and like it more and more. The outdoor opportunities are awesome in every direction. Some really struggle with the cloudiness.

As a previous post mentioned, not as much Bro Culture in Missoula, which is almost worse than liberals. I think Bro's are an evolutionary branch off of the Millennial species: totally lost, looking for significance with facial hair, shorts, plaid shirts and flat brimmed hats. Only outdoor capability is starting camp fires for pictures to post on social media.

The worst thing about Missoula is it is home to the university of shrinking enrollment with their interpretive dance courses. Also known as The university of Montana. If you go to Missoula just make sure you don't cheer for the griz. Other than that and traffic it's not a bad place.

In all seriousness, the griz suck. FTG. No in all seriousness people see what they want to see in a place. I live in Bozeman. Sure there is a bro culture a tiny but. Like if you go to a BHA event, but then there really isn't one either. Randy newberg is always at them. He's not a bro. I don't see any bros at costco. I don't see any running up the M trail or on any trail for that matter. I see them out floating the Madison hitting up the bikini hatch.(its a thing). Everyone in bozeman skis, hikes, and fly fishes. And drinks micros at micro breweries. And drinks beer downtown for music on main. And drinks beer at the MSU tailgates. And drinks beer after fishing the rivers. And drinks beer after skiing. And has a black lab named Bridger or Madison.......That they drink beer with. Man bozeman likes beer. But Maybe under 1% are bros. And they drink too. So it's all good. Missoula"s breweries are very good too. Draughtworks is one of the best in the state. And wardens is a great place to buy beer.

So what you really need to take from all of this is...poooooooor Grizzlies.

Living here my entire life, the only thing that keeps me here is that everything we like to do is very close.....hunting, fishing, hiking, snowwheeling.
The quality of these things (for me anyway) has definitely been affected by the number of people that have moved here/continue to move here. It doesn't matter what you are doing or where you go....you will still see other people most of the time. I shouldn't complain (but still will).....80% of my work is for folks that have moved here in the last 30ish years.

As far as the "bro culture", never really see it around here until archery season, usually guys in f150s and tacomas with out of state plates. Saw quite a few during spring bear season this year to.

Sounds a lot like what I'm looking for except the whole liberal & bro culture. But that's not a deal breaker. I'm a live & let live type of guy who tends to mind his own business.

Heck, I think there are groups of flat billed hat, whitr Oakley wearing, stickers in the back window goober everywhere. Don't worry they are here too. They provide a good laugh though.

Most bros I've encountered are lifted duramax or Silverado types. Very few in the F150 and Tacoma ranks. Heck, I drive a Tacoma but I'm far from that stereotype lol.

I’ve been in Colorado for 12 years and plan to move to Montana once my boy graduates high school and goes off to college. I took my family on a vacation last week where we camped out way through Wyoming and Montana and spent a couple days in Glacier. My wife really liked Missoula and Bozeman, and I could really see us living just outside of one those towns. We ate lunch at Lot G in Bozeman and I feel like so should have went over to see if OnX Maps has any job openings!

I don’t get the idea of “liberals” or “Bro” as being a deterrent to live somewhere. It’s refreshing to live somewhere where there’s an opportunity to interact with people that have different values and beliefs really. I see the same thing here in Colorado, where some of my older more conservative friends will just rail and rail on how terrible Boulder is. The only outcome it returns is more stress on them. Life is too short to worry about what other people think or do.

I worked for an outfitter that was based out of St. Ignatius after college for a few years starting in the early '90s. Back then, Missoula was a GREAT place to be single. Roll into town on a Friday afternoon, stop at Fred's for a couple beers, a game of pool or two and some entertainment, then head to Stockman's for a couple more beers and more pool, then off to Mustang Sally's. Led to many a fun weekend! And the UM/MSU football game weekends are still a couple of nights my buddy and I still talk about just about annually.

I know it's changed a ton since then, but compared to just about any place east of the Rockies I've been it'd still be a HUGE improvement and would be an upgrade from the Keeping Portland Weird crap that I live with now.

Doesn't matter if I mind our of state buyers or not. It's gonna happen and there isn't a damn thing I can do about it. So, I make a pretty good living building some awesome homes. And no, not Rocky Mountain. mtmuley
