Headed to Red Lodge MT and Cody WY from July 1st to the 10th. Would like to do some fishing. I don’t fly fish so it would be spin fishing. The Air BnB we have for a few days has Rock Creek running right beside the cabin. I’m from WV where we trout fish with spinners like Joes flies and panther martins. Will the same type of lures work out there? I’ve hunted the west but never fished out there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Those Joe’s flies will work great.
Try experimenting with splitshot about 12 to 18 inches above until you find what level the fish are located.
Be sure to check out Jeremiah Johnson’s recreated cabin right in the middle of town.

Great! That’s the same way I fish them here in WV. Usually 2 BB sized split shot about 12-18 inches above them.

And don't forget about Montana’s stream access laws. Basically find legal access and stay below the high water mark and you can walk as far as you are willing.

It's a pretty awesome law that is often under attack.

I’ll have direct access to rock creek from our Air BNB. The people we are renting from says it’s good fishing. But I want to try some other places too. My plan is to pack lures and a reel. And then just buy an inexpensive rod in Bozeman when we get there. Figure it’s easier than flying with one and better than the multi piece travel rods.

Most airlines in MT are pretty used to fishing rods. When I fly with one I typically place it in the flight attendants closet at the front of the plane. I think it counts as your personal item but no one ever questions it.

Red Lodge is my favorite spot in all of MT. Spinners will crush. Not sure what the snow situation will be up top given the latest recharge of 18" over the weekend but the high lakes in the Beartooths have some absolute tanker cutties that are more effectively fished with spinners and spoons rather than flies (at least if you're stuck on the bank). Bring some kastmasters and little closer too.

Do the fish a favor and swap the trebles for a single siwash and pinch the barb, good luck!

Panther Martins will catch trout anywhere… as for a rod, I highly recommend the little 5.9ft collapsible here from Amazon “Sougayilang”. I used to buy a brand called “Trout Boy” and they were perfect, but cannot find them anymore. This one is the closest I have found. Probably will be just as good as any cheap rod you would pick up. And it’s pretty handy. I throw it in my pack all the time when big game or upland hunting. Has a little compartment in the handle that can fit 2-3 extra panther martins, depending on size.

Have a few black, brown, and olive maribou jigs in 1/8th and 1/16th once. Those can really crush at times.

I was in a similar situation as you a few years ago. Grew up fishing for trout in the mountains of SW Virginia and used the same equipment/lures when we went out west and it worked great. We did a Yellowstone weeklong vacation and rented a house in Paradice Valley right on the Yellowstone River. We had a blast fishing behind the house in the evenings and spinners worked very well. I had never fished a river that large. One thing I found that worked well was to cast as far out in the river as possible and close the bail on the rod and just hold the rod and let the spinner sweep through the swift current while not even reeling. Caught several nice trout this way. It was fun and I hope to go again someday.
