A friend of mine bought a military trailer and I am keeping until he can come and pick it up. I have seen some folks modifying these for campers and off road haulers. Tried to do a search here but could not find anything. It's pretty cool and I am thinking of buying from him but not sure if it is worth the expense and time to modify.

I would have to get most of the work done by someone else and I am not looking to spend tons of money so I have to take that into consideration.

I know a lot of folks just like them for the looks but I am thinking of real world functionality. Anyone have ideas or suggestions as whether or not this makes sense versus buying a modern complete off road camper?

Sure it makes sense - if it makes sense for you. I.e., skills, funds, tow vehicle, etc..

I know I've seen threads (maybe on expedition portal ) of this being done. They are stout trailers and are abundant.

The question is, is it really what you want? Its most certainly a better platform than a pop up camper as far as dragin it into the woods. It looks small to me. I mean, as long as your going to do it, maybe just get an enclosed car hauler and do it with that?

Personally, I'm a truck camper fan, 'cause I don't like dragin' crap around, and I can still drag a boat, utility trailer, UTV, etc with a truck camper.

Small, heavy and can be pulled into places you’ll never get a standard trailer into.

A truck bed camper could be found to fit right in there, or a really nice tent camp could.

Dimensions? Might be ok for a solo sleeper.
Otherwise would be a great gear hauler; ATV, wood, dead critters, coolers,
wall tents, chain saws, fuel, spare tires,........

I bought an M101A2 trailer about 6 years ago. I had the exact same idea, grandiose plans to turn it into the ultimate camping and off-road centerpiece. Truth be told, its hauled some shite to the dump a few times, and sits in my garage most of the time. I like it, and I think maybe I will eventually do something with it, but I realized when tent camping and traveling to hunt, it was just easier to sleep in the truck carry all my stuff in the vehicle. I guess I just never really came to actually need it to haul gear and camp. They are pretty heavy, I think they are something like 1300 lbs empty. But, they tow well, are pretty much indestructible, and basically gives you a full size pickup truck worth of bed space.
