I can see it now..
"Which prepaid burners everyone running?" I hear the Kyocera is lightweight and you can change out the faceplate to match the rest of your kit.

Duh. Only the old Nokias pass the Form drop test.

Slightly off topic, but speaks to the legality point of the post.

Last night I was sitting in the grass gun hunting here in Iowa. I was looking over a rather odd shaped pond (if you know, you know).
My garmin told me sunset was 4 42 but I had plenty of daylight. I sat a few more minutes and got up and walked out. I heard no less than 5 shots in the distance on my walk. I got to the truck by 5pm still hearing shots, and still having enough light to shoot in a field.

Gun ends at sunset here. Not a half hour after like with archery. Technically those shots were illegal. I'm not calling it in. I guess I'm an accessory now. I try to operate under the assumption the person in the moment knows more than I do about a given situation, and they can decide what's right and wrong. This goes for a wounded mercy kill as well.

I believe you are incorrect, legal to hunt 30 min after sunset for all deer seasons in IA.

Funny you mentioned that. I was just down chasing roosters in your lovely state over the weekend. A family member is from the Storm Lake area and was deer hunting opener and I recall him stating “half hour before sunrise to half hour after sunset”.

In his case, he’s a weekend warrior who hunts his crop land just to manage the population a bit (which is insane by the way!). I think he’s a case of simply being oblivious to the discrepancy between archery/gun laws being different in your state. I already texted his boy who can hopefully let him know!

Had a similar experience a few years ago on a very nice buck. He had no obvious signs of injury, and we suspected he had been hit by a car or broke his back fighting with another buck.

We called the Sherriff's office and asked if we could put him out of his misery and they said no. Said that they were closer than the nearest game warden and we must wait until he arrived. Around an hour later, he got to the farm, and we took him out to the buck. He shot it point blank with his .40 cal sidearm at point blank range through the lungs and began writing a salvage tag. A few minutes later, the deer was still very much alive, and he shot it twice more through the lungs at PBR. The deer kicked for a few more minutes and finally let out one long last breath.

The whole thing was extremely tough to watch, and the amount of unnecessary suffering was sad. He finished writing the salvage tag and we gutted and took the buck home. I don't know what kind of ammo the Sherriff's office was issued at that time, but none of the rounds expanded on the buck, and he had 3 caliber sized entry/exit wounds.
The deputy they initially dispatched is actually a client of my business so we got to chatting a bit deeper about it and he told me that it would be illegal for him to dispatch it simply because it is too far from the roadway and outside his “jurisdiction”.

It all ended fine but it’s a shame that so much energy had to go into doing what was “right”.

He is right, all Iowa deer seasons are 30 min before sunrise to 30 min after sunset.

If it’s sick enough to need killing, you probably have enough time to call fish & game & ask. Their response will vary depending on the situation.

Seriously?? Other hunters are the reason poachers get caught 99% of the time. I could care less if people are watching me because I'm following the rules. There are far fewer wardens than what is really needed to enforce game laws. Having hunters in the field help is far from a problem.

As far as relating to the mercy killing topic, people should follow the rules or feel so strongly about the situation that they are willing to accept the consequences.
YES.

I'm no GW and won't pretend to be one either. Was raised to mind my own business and I do it pretty well.

Me thinks most poachers get caught when they piss someone off. Pretty recently a guy turned his family in for something related to how they tagged deer. Who needs LEO when you got vindictive relatives?

I agree with those purporting the prioritization of morals. I would just add that when you make the decision to be moral you also are taking responsibility for the consequences. You should have no issue standing before a judge and owning what you did and why you did it.
Absolutely

They finally implemented a salvage tag program here in WA years back that was terribly needed, and that year I came across a spike bull on the side of a mountain HWY that had broken legs but still alive that I wanted to salvage. It was about 2 a.m. and I called the Sheriffs dept., they wouldn't give me an answer and patched me through to WSP, I told the officer the situation and he asked if I had the means to dispatch and take care of it (actually had my pack and game bags in the truck), and his response was "I'm not running up the pass to shoot a wounded elk, I've got shit to do down here. If you've got proper means I authorize you to dispatch it, just make sure you fill out the salvage form".

It sucked it took that long, but the law actually aided in that situation.

A CPW officer told me it was legal here but they expect you to report it immediately and they want GPS coordinates. He strongly recommended taking video showing the animal alive and wounded beforehand.

On the flipside, South Dakota East River pheasant hunting my uncle walked up to a nice WT buck and slit its throat. it was bellowing in an empty field and nobody was around. we left the entire animal of course bc we didnt have a tag. dont remember if it had been shot or hit by a car, it was just the right thing to do
No issues if you believed it to have been hit by a car. You can legally dispatch deer in SD that are crippled from vehicle collisions.
