Looking to relocate. New Mexico or Texas as of now

I think he's probably referring to whitetail that have crossbred with MD that he's given a made up name to.

I'm not sure how anyone would call Carmeni's, blacktails, as those little buggers have unproportionally large white tails.

no idea what he is talking about, but even in the vast amount of geographical overlap in TX there is really a tiny sub set of hybridization, metatarsal gland doesn’t lie.

You are talking about Carmen Mountain Whitetails those are closer to Whitetails then Blk tails, Basically a Texas coues

first I have heard of this, would love to see some pictures if you got them. I have heard rumors of mule deer/whitetail hybrids in the childress area where I have a lease, and have seen evidence to support this. Would not suprise me if some other weird mutated hybrid deer existed in texas that i didnt know about.

The first one is an AI auto generated website article that’s just flat wrong, the scientific name it gives is – Odocoileus hemionus columbianus…. The most important thing here is “Columbianus” as in Columbia River…. Which is where communist community of Portland OR Is located, no way those deer make it in Texas environmentally or politically

You are thinking of Cameron mountain whitetails especially giving the region you are talking about

Seen two hybrids in my life.

A bruiser of a muley/whitetail hybrid in Alberta. Of course I had already punched the tag on my whitetail and mule deer.

A close friend shot a Coues/muley hybrid here in AZ. GW ticketed him for shooting the wrong species but he won in court when the biologist confirmed it was a Coues. Rack and tail said "Coues" but the body and ears were "desert mule deer".

Anywhere there is overlap in habitat, there's an opportunity for "cross pollination". Look at mule deer and blacktail on the west coast for reference.

But there are tons of blackbuck in TX.

Ill buy it may be AI generated article.. but I know two facts.. what ever they really are we call them blacktails, and rich people pay me enough to hunt them (and other stuff) to fund my addiction to killing stuff... lol

So melanistic whitetails are now called blacktails and Columbian Blacktail deer live in and are native to TX...

To the OP. Sure TX has a majority of pay to play hunting but its no where near the $30k price for two leases $10-20k for one that's been thrown around. There is a lot of hunting to be had there and found with a little bit of research. Plenty of public to get out and do your thing as well. Heck if filling your freezer hunting is your objective you can dang near do that cheaper than anything else.

lol, fair enough.

I learn something new everyday, thanks for taking the time.

New to me. I've never met anyone during my lifetime in Texas call a Texas deer a blacktail. Not even close to melanistic deer. Great marketing for your hunting outfit.

I live in Albuquerque and have already been murdered twice this year. You can draw elk or deer every year. You can draw a decent tag for one or the other every three years. You can draw a high quality tag once a decade.

Problem is there is no elk or deer or big game in NM. MS-13 gang members killed them all. The crime stats and education scores do keep cost of living low however

I’d vote Texas!

I love NM but for the most part, everyone is poor, criminals get out of jail the same day, education is bad, and most people are drunk all the time. I get a deer or elk tag every year, otc bear, otc turkey, otc sheep, plus several species that you can’t hunt in any other state (unless it’s some high fence operation). My son killed an elk at 8 years old AND he knows to read (shocking).

You just have to decide if public land is worth living in a third world country. To me it is 100%.

Crossing the border into New Mexico from Texas is like going back 20-30 years in time. I love visiting there a couple, three times a year but would probably find it much less charming if I lived there. Buddy of mine had horror stories of what it took to build a little metal shop building in his own backyard. Yes, the state was involved in the permitting process.

We’ve been in Texas 25 years and truth be told I’m ready for a change - but New Mexico is completely different and I’m not talking about anything to do with hunting. The opportunities are to be found in Texas. Statistically speaking, that is.

Moved to Texas three years ago. Live just south of Houston about halfway to Galveston. Yes the humidity, flooding, and potential hurricanes suck. Traffic sucks if you have to drive across town. Houston is an hour from Houston. That being said we like being near the water. Fishing is great. I’ve drawn public hunts every year since I moved here. There is thousands of acres of public land within a couple hour drive. Is it the same as wandering for miles out west in the mountains like I was used to ? No, but I’ve seen deer on every trip. If we didn’t miss the coast I would probably moved up closer to Dallas.
No state income tax, but property tax is high. Another negative of the Houston area is the homeowners insurance if you are closer to the coast. That all being said we still like it here. Hard to find a more pro gun state if that is something important to you

The more I think about it… I feel like you guys are making some money shooting small west Texas mulies and calling them “Texas Blacktail.”

Not at all. The same family has had that lease since 1992, they are happy and their funds are always paid 2 years in advance..
