Have a 2013 Gmc Duramax 2500HD just leveled on 34.5 tires and a camper that I need to get painted. 100k miles and going. Looking to switch from torsion bar suspension up front to a coil over kit here soon. View attachment 268431

If you are running the truck empty and mostly driving light to medium washboard at high speeds, the coilover conversion is the way to go. With the Duramax up front, you'll already be pushing most of the coils too hard, and really need to get something custom. If you run any kind of weight in your rig, or do extended highway driving, I would strongly recommend against coils. The torsion bars get a bad rap from a lot of people, but they are very versatile and handle the weight well. Put your money into a quality set of shocks, as that's what these trucks are really lacking. If you drive a lot of highway, look for a digressive shock like Icon. It won't handle the small bumpy washboard at high speed as well as a linear or progressive shock, but will drive nice on the pavement, and handle the big hits and heavy stuff offroad well.

May have to give that a try be a lot cheaper to just throw shocks on it. I would love to throw a solid axle under it but at that point I might as well just go buy a cummins.

That’s how I ended up with a wrap on this one. I scratched the holy hell out of my first Black Raptor because it’s so wide. If I screw up and drive through cedar/scrub oak lined trails again hoping the wrap only gets killed.
Just curious, how much does a vinyl wrap cost?

Just to be clear, I'm talking about high-quality shocks. If you put a set of Kings on that are custom-valved for your rig and the areas you drive, you will see a huge improvement in performance. Kings are more of a linear valving, though, so it's not going to drive really tight on the pavement.

Coil-overs can't be beat for high-speed desert racing, but if you're not doing really high speeds on light washboard, they just aren't worth it, IMO. Since you bought a Duramax, I'll just assume that isn't your focus.

RAM trucks are definitely built with some appealing feautres, stock, for off road travel, but they often come with a bunch of other issues. I have had great success with GM powertrains over my last 800k+ miles, and the suspensions can be made to work well on HD trucks, but each brand has its tradeoffs. I would recommend upgrading the upper control arms and tie rods, as well, as those have been the consistent failure areas for me on these trucks.

Here’s my 2020 Raptor,

I’ve used one of these guys pretty much every year since 2011 as my primary Hunting vehicle, camping, vacationing and hauling.

Like a lot of you are saying if you want to go off road, your going to have to have some failure points you’ll need to address especially if your hauling, crawling, in the desert over landing, weakest link, well you know. A lot of times I’ll have a couple motorcycles on top of my gear in the bed so anything’s possible on a stock truck.

This rig is upgraded with:

• front and rear suspension, upper and lower control arms, springs, etc.
• HD +3 rear leafs
• bump stops
• fenders and bedsides
• Vinyl wrapped (a couple times out without it but I don’t advise it)
• a bunch of other goodies that I can easily swap out for what I’m doing any given week.

For the peeps that know their way around lifts, how do you tell if the lift was done right? The current rig was lifted but after seeing the shoddy light bar and stereo install I'm questioning the thoroughness of the lift. Figured check and see if there are aftermarket tie rods and control arms?

Added bilstein 6112/5160 at top setting, new UCA, diff drop, coachbuilder shackle, new skid plate. Rest is stock. Crappy mileage but 100% reliable so far. Shell works well for keeping dogs safe on fall/winter hunts.

What year and is it the same engine or have you swapped it withy anything if you don't mind me asking?
It's an 87. Had it since around 2005 or 6. Right now it has a stock engine. Had a High Performance engine that blew a few years ago. I had an 87 Tin Top that I bought brand new in 87. My kid took it when she got her license in 91. I have owned four altogether counting a parts car. It does have a lower gear Transfer case and a 4" lift.

Very cool, looking at getting into one myself. There are a few trails around here that my 4Runner just won't make it through/up. Been looking at getting an old FJ40 but those are insanely expensive so this is my 2nd choice. :)

My first rig I bought in 1991 in 11th grade. Straight six and 3 speed auto. Still runs great. The Silverado is the only new vehicle I've owned. Love the camper.
