Last 10 or so trucks have all been diesel. We do pull different trailers for work and farm but just primarily my personal preference to have diesel even though it does hit the pocketbook a little harder. Never had issues that were catastrophic. Daily driver now has 210 k on it and my other on is a 2021 with 30k on it so everything would be covered under warranty if it did break. Diesel’s just seem to be built better for the long run in my opinion.

2017 F350, crew cab long bed. Lariat, 6.7, camper shell, 100k now.

Sunroof has gone out twice. First fix Qasim ~$2200, second time is around $700
Had a rat eat my vacuum canister
Did the brakes, tires etc.
Back up camera sucks, it has a recall but there are no parts
Driver side door lock had to be replaced under recall.

When I drive around close to the house, on and off road, mpg is 13.4. But if I get on the freeway and cruise it will 17.5 -19.

We buy between 4 and 6 trucks annually and since the change in 2011, we have not had major issues.

One thing I really do like about 2017 and newer long beds is the tank is 48 gallons.

Everyone complains about DEF but we've never had an issue. Unless some dipshit puts DEF in their diesel tank...that's happened more than once.

06 dodge caravan, bought with 90k miles and currently at 146k. Lots of issues with snow drifts knocking my power steering hoses off so I keep a jug in the back. Enough rust on the doors now you can see daylight so I got the latest AirPods with the noise cancellation feature and it’s like I’m driving a brand new electric van and hardly notice I have kids in the back.

I had a 2009 Silverado with the 5.3. At 178k miles it lost an exhaust valve lifter on cylinder six and had to have the engine rebuilt. Overall I had a lot of issues with that truck and decided to get rid of it at that point. Giving Ford a try now

Just sold my 05 Dodge 2500 5.9L Cummins diesel. Had 217,000
Miles on it. Just normal wear and tear replacement stuff….nothing major. Ram great…..seemed to go through front end stuff more so though. Didn’t tow as much as I used to, so bought a new 3/4 ton gasser.

21 Tacoma manual V6. 35k trouble free miles. I read about the turd of an engine before I bought it. All true. The engine can barely accelerate to traffic speed on the interstate. I can't pass 18 wheelers going 75 when there is a headwind. Really. Not why I bought the truck though so it does what I need.
Seems odd for a manual transmission especially…. My 16 Tacoma has plenty of power.

If you want to be honest......

If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna give you trials.

Some are better than others, a little searching can reveal problems in models. It doesn't guarantee that a previous owner didn't give a rip. No fluid changes, pulling a lot, likely will cause the trans to give up the ghost. Rear end aint far behind it. Full throttle driving everywhere versus being a bit conservative.

It's used.

Anybody got experience with a new super duty and the 7.3 godzilla (gasser) engine? Been looking hard at it and the fact that it's naturally aspirated and not hybrid makes me think it could be a long range performer...

1997 Ford F-250 7.3L Powerstroke diesel, 5 speed manual extended cab. 170k miles. Solid as a rock. Gonna sell her soon, she’s been in the family since new, just too big.

The only problem with older diesels is when it comes time to fix something, it’s spendy.

P
New diesels are even more spendy to fix than the old ones. Also the emissions crap on most of the new ones are what cause all the break downs.

08 Chevy Colorado 3.7L i5 with 149K on it. Bought it with 59K and have only done fluids, front brakes, front and rear struts, water pump, some lightbulbs, and a few sets of tires. I rally the shit out of it and she still keeps going.

I’ve owned 4 full size trucks.

‘04 Chevy 1500 with the 5.3. Bought with 20k miles, and traded it in with 120k miles. Never had a single issue.

2011 Chevy 1500, 5.3L with Active Fuel Management (or whatever they call it). Bought it with 14k miles. At 83k miles, it started going into limp mode. After $3k, they wanted to start tearing into the engine, telling me it could end with new rings/cylinders. Traded it in.

2017 Toyota Tundra with 5.7L. Bought brand new. Traded it in with 73k miles. Never an issue.

2021 Ram 2500, 6.7L Cummins. Bought brand new. Currently have 22k miles on it. No issues yet, but it does have the current recall where it could go up in flames. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I had a 2013 Sierra 1500 for a few years. Ended up getting rid of it, but had 110k miles on it before it went away.

I was religious about changing fluids (including tranny) and doing routine services. The power steering pump went out, and the AC Delco filter caused low oil pressure, but it ran fine other than that.

‘13 Ford F-150 3.5 EcoBoost with 181,000 trouble free miles. Regular maintenance is all. It does like burning through spark plugs tho. I’m on my 3rd set and will do them again at 200k. Rust is getting pretty bad now as it’s a MN truck and parks outside. There’s a burning smell the last 10,000 miles that I can’t figure out the cause. It needs to last me a while yet as I just bought daughter #1 a car and daughter #2 will need one next year. Hoping to pass it down to my 11 year old son in 5 years then I can get a new one.

08 Silverado duramax. 315,000 mi. Daily driver. At 250,000 dpf filter plugged, deleted then. Other than that, fluid changes, tires, and bearings. Zero issues, hoping to get 500k out of it.

2016 Ram 2500 Diesel 4X4
Original brakes.
I replaced a headlight that blew. Other than regular maintenance, nothing.
I get 20MPG on the highway.

I do have a bit of a chirping noise coming from under the truck somewhere. Not sure if it is the turbo or the torque convertor. Either way, the truck has 215,000 miles on it and if I have to dump a couple thousand into it then I guess that's cheaper than a new one....(I will never own another diesel again)

I should sell the thing right now while they are in high demand and get the Tundra I have been eyeballing.

2007 Ram 2500, 5.9 Cummins. Had an injector pump fail early on, maybe 15K miles, replaced under warranty. Water pump bearing failed at about 105K. Needs front brakes every 90K or so. Front end rebuild including wheel bearings at 180K. Rear two injector lines corrode and blow out. Need to watch them carefully. At 195K now, rear brakes still good.

2007 was the transition year when Dodge went from the 5.9 to the 6.7. Very glad I got the 5.9. It does all I need and more.

97 f-250 7.3 Powerstroke. 373,000. Bought in '09 with 92,000
Transmission rebuilt at 220ish (nothing major, just a sticking valve)

It leaks more oil than it burns, but runs like a sewing machine & gets 21mpg on the interstate (Edge tuner)

2011 f150 5.0. Nothing but a fuel pump and a right front strut so far. 201,000 miles. Been riding a aftermarket tune since 51,000 miles. It’ll do 0-6 in a little over 4 seconds and gets 18 mpg around town. I have hauled and towed a lot with it. Worked it hard up through 2020. Then retired it from work, spent $6000 on body work and paint, and turned it into my personal hobby ride that takes me hunting, fishing, and any where else I go leisurely. It’s the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Bar none. No Chevy, Toyota, or dodge compares. And, I’ve owned sone good ones too.

2006 f250 SD 6.0. It’s was bullet proofed by the best diesel mechanic on planet earth. It’s now has about 175,000. Not one issue since then. It’s a great truck. Pulls hard. It’s just strong. And flawless since the work over.

2012 GMC 2500. It has 176,900 mikes on it. And it acts like it. It runs. But, the transmission doesn’t do right. Hangs up between shifts if you are accelerating. Not a bad truck. But, not a Ford either.

08 Ram 1500 4.8L, ~185k miles. Runs great, fuel efficiency is crap but I’m the only owner and I don’t think I’ll ever sell it. Had to replace the engine about 40k ago. I was an idiot and drove through a “puddle” and ended up with some water in the engine and then rod knock followed immediately. Thing’s a real brute though and not pretty look at anymore. When I get back from overseas I’m going to do a transmission rebuild.

1989 Toyota Xtracab V6 4x4 - outstanding in every regard. I've had it 34 years and not one complaint. Lots of folks call the 3.0L the 3.slow, but I've never had a problem with it. I didn't buy it as a sports car, but I do drive it like I stole it.

2000 F-350 CC LB 4x4 7.3L PSD - I bought this with an automatic.......hated it. Sold with 13k miles for more than I paid for it.
2001 F-350 CC LB 4x4 7.3L PSD - 6-speed manual......love it.
