Last minute suppressor vote

I haven’t seen any discussion of the byrd rule/byrd bath, which is likely to stop this in its tracks. I’ll snap up a can or seven if this passes, but if was a betting man I’d say the parliamentarian will see this as a policy goal not a fiscal one
The youtube video from Colion Noir a few posts above yours talks about it and a speaking point around it.

I have killed countless animals and made it 40 years without using one. I am pretty sure I can wait. I'm not subjecting myself to the man's reckless joy tax to own something that (in my opinion) looks a bit ridiculous on the end of any gun.....but I might buy one from Walmart if they become available.

Just my uncivilized opinion. lol
They do remind me of a toilet paper roll. lol

Didn’t catch that but his processing cost argument has 0% chance of holding water when we’re talking about the federal government

The byrd rule is 40 years old and has blocked both parties from advancing controversial policy in the budget - and they knew it when they added it

Right now you can get whatever you want and be done in less than 48 hours. My last one was 23 hours. I have plenty of cans right now, but if anyone out there doesn't have one but wants one for this coming season my advice would be to go pay your $200 right now and get your suppressor in a few days. The paperwork is stupid simple if your shop does their own e-forms. Takes 5 minutes and they'll tell you exactly what to do. My 3 year old could do it if needed.

Shooting unsuppressed is un-civilized. Argue all you want but I guarantee you if you get one you'll think the exact same way.

Edit to add: I say that about going and forfeiting $200 right now because if this all passes it will be very hard to get the one you want for quite some time I'd believe, putting this hunting season in jeopardy.
I just don't see a shortage if it passes. Just like you said, it is super easy right now and shooters have been getting them for many years. Just took 9 days with a trust, big deal. My first one many years ago took over a year. That was over a decade ago. I'm not seeing guy's lined up to fill out a 4473 for a can. Maybe for a few days until the newness wears off. Those same guy's can get them today for a $200 stamp. If that is all that is holding hunters and shooters back well?

Since the nfa is simply taxes, that may get around the Byrd rule as the change is budgetary/tax.

Worth a watch, even if it is typical guntube clickbait. In short, several states have provisions on the books currently that require suppressor's to be registered at the federal level, including some very (currently) red states. Curious how it could/will play out.

Some states are firearm sanctuary states…in other words counties can refuse to prosecute certain gun laws. New Mexico is one of them. However the NM State Constitution is very strong, pro-gun:

“No law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes, but nothing herein shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons. No municipality or county shall regulate, in any way, an incident of the right to keep and bear arms. (As amended November 2, 1971 and November 2, 1986.)”

Once the Senate votes on the Bill, and the President signs the Reconciliation Bill, suppressors will no longer require registration. However the Gun Control Act of 1968 defines a silencer as a firearm, which would require a BCI and FFL transfer like any other required part, firearms etc. I believe I read somewhere that some org is trying to have that firearm definition lined out for just silencers.

Ignoring reality is even less helpful.
In California “reality” is dystopian in several ways. I willfully strive to ignore things that don’t affect me. I STRIVE to be polite, kind, and give people grace. I obey laws and regulations regardless if they are wrong and/or unconstitutional, and hand Jesus the real heavy shit frustrations to carry on his shoulders. Bill

Another way to look at it is, there are very few stores that stock cans right now. If they can sell them with a 4473, a lot of gun stores will start stocking them. Filling that pipeline with inventory will put a lot of pressure on current supply chains.
If they are in stock in most gun stores, and customers can take them home with them that day, sales will increase.

Besides the tax stamp, the last one I bought was 2 separate trips totaling 480 miles driving.

I would hedge my bet that multiple gun manufacturers have designs and can ramp up production in short order, it’s not like a suppressor is all that complicated to make. In the following months they’ll be standard on most rifles I would assume a package deal. We are entering a new age of freedom and American manufacturing if we can hold course and get this bill through . I’m most excited for my employees who won’t pay taxes on OT hours lol. I won’t ever struggle getting volunteers for big jobs and after hour calls.

I can see it in rural areas, but down here the Local shops have had them on the shelf for years. With CNC machines and 3-d printing the only reason for a shortage is greed.

I was excited and optimistic that the OG rollout could coincide with the pending law changes. So I looked up the possible effective date of the bill. Assuming I'm reading it correctly (see below), I don't think that the suppressor changes will be effective until 1/1/26. Being optimistic, if the law is enacted by July 2nd or 3rd, then the changes could be effective as of 10/1/25 (it depends on if you include the end date in the calculation). I heard that Republicans have "set a deadline" (whatever that means) of 7/4 for passage by both houses and for delivery for signature, but that there is a belief it will take longer than that to be completed.

EFFECTIVE DATE .—The amendments made by this section shall apply to calendar quarters beginning more than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act.

Link to complete version of H.R. 1 - a/k/a "One Big Beautiful Bill". The silencers provision is section 112029, starting on page 977.

I've never seen an effective date be tied to "calendar quarters beginning after..." I would have expected just some number of days (30, 60 or 90), or January 1, 2026.

I'm curious how overtime is defined. Not all jobs work on the 40/hrs a week model.
It'll cut a lot of federal taxes for middle class hourly employees regardless. It'll also put a big incentive on not being salaried.
However they define it, employers and employees will set up pay structures to take maximum advantage.

I like a lot of what's in this bill. I really don't like the insane amount of deficit spending in there that makes Obama and Biden look like Ayn Rand. Tax and spend liberals are bad for everyone. Don't tax and spend even more Republicans will also end this country.

The Senate Finance Committee yesterday released their version (see page 261) of the Big Beautiful Bill. It completely removes every device, except machine guns and destructive devices from the NFA. So SBRs and SBSs would no longer be regulated.

Well good, I’ve got one I’ll hold off cutting then until I see where it goes.

I have one being cut now. I thought about delaying but I’m not optimistic about passage (to me this seems like something they will use to horse trade), and even if it passed tomorrow, the current effective date is too far off. YMMV

I’ve considered that, but the can has also been backordered from AB since October, so I’ve pretty much forgotten about actually putting it to use any time soon anyway.

Would be pretty cool if they could just get the NFA thing through on its own rather than in the One Big Brutal Increase to our National Debt bill.
💯 I am awaiting passage like a child the night before Xmas, but I also concede that such a view means I've fallen for the pork given what the overall BBB will do to the country. It's sad.
