Sorry, it’s not only “that unit” keep looking . Bottom line I made my point, and Alaska is changing big time. As touched on before, if they scream loud enough the guides and transporters will get their way, and the 3 deer quota will be back in action…… IF you use a guide.

5-6 K for one deer? INov? Sorry there are a lot better options now.

Word on the street, alot of sobbing eyes up there......

Be my guest.
But with the abundance of deer in AK I don't think there is an AK resident good enough to find 3 deer in Oregon. Especially in a week.

There is a big difference in a biological reason, and the fact AK residents are better about crying to the govt rather then just hunting harder.
Biologically I think Oregon should quit mule deer hunting all together for at least 3-5 years.

But if we had numbers I wouldn't cry about competition.
I hunt and live in Idaho and share the sentiment of Alaska folks, it’s tiring seeing places where you live and have history with overrun by flat brim SM folk doing the next grand adventure the found on YouTube hushin or new berg channel.

ill just state that I have no current desire in going to Kodiak and have never looked into it but I doubt it would persuade my trip if I could only get 1 deer how much meat are people realistically flying back to the lower 48 anyways and so if it knocks some of the pressure down well Then good for Alaska and good for AK residents
I wish my state would keep its residents in mind in regards to quality hunting experiences once in a while, until then I’ll keep pressing them to do so

Idaho already completely changed the unit structure to spread out non residents.

You guys are hilarious. How many mule deer bucks can you take when you go in a trip to any state out west as a non resident? How many regular Blacktail or Columbia Blacktail bucks? How about NR Coues deer?

Getting all this meat back from Kodiak is not easy or inexpensive. Whitetails are a much better fit for stocking the freezer. Or elk, which are usually limited to one bull for NRs everywhere I’ve ever been.

Kodiak is a gem and I’m glad I got at least 10 of my 20 years going there before all the dirtbags prostituting the outdoors to make money and pay for their stone sheep, brown bear, and mountain caribou hunts got their dirty hands on it.

Justifying a trip to Kodiak by price per pound is a sad way to look at it.

For me part of it is the adventure sure.
But yes with not hunting my best years because of the military I have had very limited deer tags and harvest.
I still get alot of buck fever and feel I need to harvest as many animals as possible to calm that down.
Part of the allure to Kodiak was to get alot of killing in, in a short time.

All im saying is one deer isn't worth $5k to me.
The adventure just isn't worth the $5k
Doesn't have anything to do with the meat I just give deer meat away anyway.

I just want to kill the most animals per dollar.
With some adventure.

I get all of what you typed because i've probably felt the same way at some point early in my hunting life as i moved from stage to stage, BUT man some of what you wrote makes me cringe as an Alaska hunter and sportsman. First, killing doesn't calm us down just like we soldiers never stop loving combat operations. The buck fever you experience is not bloodlust as much as it is lack of first hand experience making shot selections and self restricting opportunities to fill any and all tags in our pocket.

As an Alaskan hunter, by law, the meat is made most important and giving it away is not our MO. It validates your first priority of killing not for food but for bragging rights and jitters control. I encourage you to dig deeper for more of connection to the process.

Your last point of killing the most for less money makes me want to ask you to stay out of Alaska so you're not engaging the actual problem of perception here which influences state decisions to limit everyone else.

$5K for a deer hunt is stupid whether we shoot 1 or 3 bucks, but the meat in my freezer doesn't know what it costs to gather it and store it for the next year. When my wife goes with me on a moose float, the price goes from $5K to $10K for 500-lbs of meat and experience. Crazy town man.

The five stages of hunter development are:
  • Shooting Stage.
  • Limiting-Out Stage.
  • Trophy Stage.
  • Method Stage.
  • Sportsman Stage.

For all the guys that want to kill a lot of stuff for whatever reason, Africa is a fantastic place for that, especially if you don’t mind cull stuff. And you will live like a king for as long as you are there.

Australia you can shoot hundreds of kangaroos, cattle, donkeys, and camels.

Both big adventures with similar coats to Kodiak.

I feel like you should hunt the SE. You can stack whitetails like no tomorrow there.

As far as kills per $$$....I see it more of experience per $$$. Alaska is all about the experience to me, it's like no other place. I would rather go to AK to shoot one deer (or caribou) then Georgia to shoot 20 for the same $$$.

nah brother our differences don't make us different. We're all on the same progression of strokes to make it all make sense. It's more about discussing opinions and trying to learn as a culture to be better than the earlier versions of ourselves.

Maybe it's less what you stated than how you stated it that made me cringe. You're opinions are welcome but you should know that I'm only a "lefty" when my right is broken, and when both sides are strugglin, I drag everything forward in a straight line.
