Kids rifle manifesto

Just saw this post and I’m getting my son his first deer blaster. You’ve convinced me to go .223. What suppressor do you recommend? He will be carrying the gun the entire time.

Good on you!

I am still 100% satisfied with my AB Raptor 6, especially with the reflex mount for cartridges like the .223 and 6mmARC burning under 30 grains of powder.

If you want it to do double duty the Raptor 8 is noticeably better on larger cartridges (even .308 size that difference is substantial).

By reputation (I have not shot them personally) the Diligent Defense Wolf Hunter is great and would save you a couple hundred and the AB A10 would save a couple hundred more. Heavier, but not unreasonably so and still good suppression.

How would a suppressed 22-250 shooting the 77 TMK's stack up for kids? I have a 22-250 barrel on hand. I just don't know what to expect with recoil vs the 223. From numbers I have ran it should be around the 6 ARC recoil.

My 10yo has zero issues with a suppressed 6ARC. He shoots it about like I'd expect him to shoot a pellet gun honestly.

He'll want to shoot it more than your wallet wants him to shoot it.

One of the beautiful things about .223 and 6mmARC is that barrel life is as close to infinite as it gets, and brass is cheap and plentiful, and it doesn't need much powder.

He'll have a lot of fun shooting it, especially if you load it mild. I think you're right, more powder but less bullet should put it in 6mmARC territory. Suppressor makes such a difference,, my kids' preference order is 6mmARC unsuppressed least favorite, .223 unsuppressed, 6mmARC suppressed, .223 suppressed most favorite.

It’s not bad, but it is snappier than most expect.

How does the 22 Creedmoor compare? It’s cheaper for me to have the barrel punched out to a 22 Creedmoor then it is to buy stuff for the 22-250. I know the recoil will be more, but is it substantially more?

It’s functionally the same.

Flinch is the enemy of all shooters, trap shooters go to release triggers cause they flinch... teach them to be good shots with the 22lr. Ruger, tikka, cz, savage all make 22's that will outshoot the avg deer rifle. Get them hitting clay birds / balloons at anticipated hunting ranges with the 22.

For the hunt, get a collapsible stock ar15, not sure that caliber matters here, all the ar15 offerings do well, 223, 22arc, 6arc, 6.5g, 300aac. I've taken game with subsonic, but ranging is ultra important. I'd probably stay super with a young shooter unless I had a blind and bait set up where the shot was known distance.

Yes, supress. You as an adult will enjoy a supressor. I'm relatively new to supressors, and I quickly found myself only shooting suppressed. Just yesterday I was plinking pigeons at 200 yds with a subsonic 22lr, its a blast.

Train them on the 22, verify their zero on the centerfire, then take them after game. Shoot as little of the high-power as necessary.

Personally, its a collapsible stock ar15 in 223, 16" side charger from bear creek, gas tube removed. This makes it a spring assist bolt action, and pa legal.

I’m planning Howa mini 6ARC cut to 18-20”with 85gr sierra HPBT gamekings and a suppressor. This does however have 40% more recoil than a 223 with 73/75/77’s. Virginia is a 6mm minimum state though. My daughter is 14months niece and nephew are 3 and 6. I know this will make some people unhappy, but I have had some longer tracking jobs with my 6ARC (80bonded,85hpbt,103ELDX) than with 6.5 CM and especially 300WSM on DCAP tags. This is night shooting and not hunting, so tracking time matters. That discussion is immaterial to young shooter/recoil conversation though.

I think I am going to try the 22 Creedmoor and just down load it a bit. Thanks for all the information on here.

Yeah chassis can be pricey. After the conversation above I went down stairs and threw this together for him to try tonight. Not chassis but very adjustable stock. He could see reticle well.

12.5” 6.5 Grendel. Same powder load as ARC (32grains). 120g bullet out of this barrel was 2400fps last summer. Even with can it’s at 18” and not heavy. Will see how he shoots it.

I will say I’d much prefer to have a bolt gun for him. He’s been shooting a T1x great for a year. But not sure I want to start from scratch and build one. I think I can get him going with the AR.

Edit: forgot Hornady came out with the new ELD-VT bullets. Should be perfect for “training” and a project like this. 100g .45BC. Guessing in my short barrel close to 2600 or so. 1500ftlbs is a smidge (10%) above a standard 223 and a bit less than 6ARC (normal length barrel). I’m gonna snag some and will report back. Picture of my 6.5C loads vs 6.5G. impressive power in such a small case.
What buttstock is that

As far as my kids go I have 3, the oldest is 17 and is too tough for his own good. He's never cared what he shot and just did it and has done fine. The middle kid doesn't tolerate recoil at all! None! 6.5 creedmoor with a brake....nope he wasn't about that life. The youngest is too young still.

I have a 6.5 creedmoor for the oldest kid, he shoots it regularly without a brake and loves it.

The middle kid is 12 now and he has a CVA Scout 300 blackout with an omega 300 on it. That rifle has zero recoil shooting 150 grain fusions and has killed 6 or 8 deer in the short time we've had it. Short, quiet, no recoil and cheap. Can't beat it.

Just found out in WA state you have to use .24 cal or bigger. Looks like .223 is out of the question for me. What’s your next best option?

6 ARC, 6GT or a downloaded Creedmoor or 243. You could also look at 6 Dasher. Are you looking for factory setups or willing to go custom and handload?

I’m just looking for something factory and simple to get my guy shooting and comfortable. Comfort and ability to practice, ie economy, is the most important thing for me b
