Kauai Archery Hunt Opportunities

I had an Alaska airlines buddy pass set to expire and impulsively bought a ticket for late April to Kauai. I vacationed there and hiked the Kalalua trail two years ago and had seen enough to know that there would be good archery hunting opportunities if I repeated the trip. To my uneducated surprise, the trail is now closed “indefinitely” due to severe storms and landslides.

So, I now find myself scrambling to find a backup option. Waimea Canyon area appears to be a close second but I am struggling to determine the likelihood for success based on an online review. Does anyone have any input or suggestions!? Are there other good public land options that I may be missing? Any and all information is appreciated.

Goats are fairly easy to find. pigs you need a dog. No deer. I was there with the wife last year and decided against hunting. Hunting goats just doesn't get me excited.

Is what they really need is chicken hunting season, bastards are everywhere and I mean everywhere.

Thank you for the response! It is reassuring to hear that the goats are “easy” to find. That was what I ultimately determined on the Na Pali Coast but failed to spend much time elsewhere last time I was on Kauai.

I transitioned from rifle to archery last year so am looking to gain some experience and meat while chasing the goats. Though, I will have to look into chicken regs because I agree, they are everywhere!

That says you can shoot them with pellet, small cal rifle or shotgun. Who do you ask about bow since it is not a regulated critter? My wife already wants to go to HI, could be a win-win.

I leave the "chicken whackin" to my crew. I'm the world's worst turkey hunter. I'll stick to spring time 'skrat trapping, bear hunting, and walleye fishing.

Whack em with a stick. The only thing they are protected from is animal cruelty.

The problem is you won't really find them back in hunting blocks. They are flightless sky rats.. human areas only.

Really tough meat.

Did you have any information from your prior goat hunt? Any close calls? Would you go back to the same area? Or was the new site your buddy showed you that much better?

Ur over thinking this

They are ungulates that breed potentially 4 offspring annually with no predators.

You can only hunt Friday-Monday so plenty of time to scout on the days off.

Goats make a lot of noise, and live in big mobs.. if you miss or spook then they only piss off for 50-100 yards generally and will give another chance.

Get above them, and be aware that if you only see a couple, there's more around. The whippers will hold back, and a lot of time be the last to move into new areas

If a big billy pins you down, go on all fours, make goaty/sheep noises for a bit with ur bow overhead and slowly crawl out of view and work around on top of them.

Look for brush moving to find the mob when ur moving in on a stalk.
Don't worry about creeping around too quietly, goats aren't like deer.. although they aren't retarded either. Billy's don't get old by being dumb.

Probably seen a better side of a 1000 on my trip.. probably 30-50 daily. Not heaps of +20" billies, but all the open units right now get hit regularly. A decent billy in the units will be just flaring up at the ends.

I would still prefer to hunt the Kalalau Trail just because of the amazing scenery and I enjoy hiking. Obviously that wasn’t an option for this year so prior to my trip I spent a ton of time researching online for trails with “wildlife viewing”. Most everything will point you to one area for “goat viewing”. GO THERE!

After picking my spot, I overlaid the hunt units onto Google Earth and had an idea of where I wanted to go. When I met up with my buddy, we went to roughly the same area I had picked out. Populations are healthy but muzzleloader season had just ended so they were a little cagey. In total we saw roughly 100 goats.

If you haven’t already, get your hunters education exemption squared away online and snag your license after they send you your exemption number. It’s only taken about 30 minutes to get a response each time. If the area you go has hunter check-in stations, use them. Bonus is you’ll get an idea of how many hunters are in the area and whether or not they were successful.

Thank you for taking the time to write that out! As you mentioned, I may be overthinking it but naturally changes to plans (e.g., closed trail) have my mind racing a bit. Though, the thread thus far has been rather reassuring.

I’ve never hunted Kauai. I have hunted the crap out of Maui, Lanai, and Molokai.

Best axis deer hunting is in lanai or Molokai. I would pay for the private land hunt on lanai if you can’t get in to the spots. It’s a short plane ride.

Deer and Pigs are what I like to hunt. Goat hunting is like jack rabbit hunting on the mainland... disgusting animals that taste like shit.
