It is once again time for a new vehicles are garbage thread.

Jeebus... maybe I'll grab that extended warranty after all.

Already around 25k miles over past 6 months and no trouble yet, with some some long drives and backcountry trips. I sure hope I don't get that sort of problem. Would really piss me off.

But you're right - I'll my friends with trucks that are a year old or so are cussing them no matter the brand.

I’ve put 40 on my 24 year old 24v Cummins in that same time with no problems, too. It cost less than a year’s payments on a new one. All that stuff that breaks? Don’t have it.

Its high 20s and the def heater is not functioning. The def heater needs replaced or maybe wiring i would think. If it gets into the teens and the def tank and lines freeze, serious issues will arise. We have been unable to get the 175 mile to safe mode to go off today. So we maybe driving alllll the way back home at 60 mph or less. We have a call in to a chevy diesel mechanic buddy so maybe he can help. But again, modern truck problems drastically alters multiple days of a hunt.
The DEF freezes all the time. It's not like it sits there for a week with the heater on. The heater is just so it actually functions after driving for awhile and the def tank has a chance to thaw. There is no damage to anything for the DEF to be frozen, and continue to be frozen. You'll just have more NOx in your emissions.
1) if you live in an area you can, delete.
2)Get a code reader than you can reset any code. And keep resetting it until you get home. This is mandatory with any modern diesel. The EPA would rather you die in the cold than you be able to drive a perfectly functioning vehicle home.

The code reader trick is a toss up. Many emmissions related codes that put the truck into reduced speed or idle only mode require on-board tests to be performed and pass before they will allow the limiting condition to be cleared and you'll still be dead in water until its diagnosed, fixed and the proper prove out test is run.
Making all that crap fall off is the best answer, but thats not a cheap proposition these days either.
The fact that the EPA can Mandate a vehicle shut it self down because of a failure in an emmissions control system, that they also mandated is such massive government overreach. Unfortunately I think reversal of such overreach will take an act of congress and lord knows thats got a snow balls chance in hell at best.
But who knows. Removing supressors from the NFA list and repealing ridiculous emissions standards that have made vehicle so much more expensive and less reliable are certainly things I think at least a small majority if Americans would be all for. Maybe some folks in DC will actually bring that stuff to the table with valid effort and planning behind it. I wont be holding my breath.

Cant wait to see how these new Gas Particulate filters pan out and what kind of nonsense problems they create.

My Banks will clear them and then it comes up and I clear it again and it comes up and I clear it. Can also do the stationary regen if needed. Not something you'd want to drive around with, but it'd keep me from freezing to death like the EPA wants. Honestly we should be charging them with attempted murder every time this happens.

Funny you should mention the EPA mandate..... Trump just said, and his EPA head also talked about rolling back DEF altogether. Especially on farm equipment.
