Is it just me or are poaching consequences just a slap on the wrist?

We should classify them as non violent felonies and you loss all firearms rights for X period of time. Once your probation period is up, your rights will be restored. A person that commits another firearm violation while under probation would really be screwed them. Maybe not though...

I always find it near comical when they impose an X-year ban on hunting to a proven poacher. They probably didn't have a license when poaching anyway. How is that suppose to stop them?
Its probably so they can stack their punishment.

If they get caught breaking their ban, that adds another charge, which allows increased punishment

The entire legal system is a joke. A few years ago I was in Traffic court for going 7 over the limit, fine my bad I sped, I’ll pay. They made me go to traffic school, pay court fees, dinged my license and I had to pay a 300 dollar ticket.

Some dork who had been driving without insurance for the past 3 years got a 100 dollar fine and 30 days to get insured…

If it worked as intended, a hunting/fishing/trapping revocation or suspension prevents the subject from purchasing licenses in all states/provinces that are part of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact (every US state is in it). This obviously does not prevent the subject from engaging in that activity, but it makes it harder to do so.

Many wildlife fines/penalties are already sufficient, but when society decided that we need to water down penalties imposed for crimes like murder, every lower offense got watered down as well. I can't see a national push for the death penalty for violent crimes so I can't see an equal push for increased penalties for wildlife crimes. Social media shaming seems to be the modern way of doling out some justice.

As I read through other poaching thread, one thing is apparent. Most poaching is done using legal hunting as cover. Taking away hunting privileges may not stop poachers from poaching, but it will for sure make it tougher to not get caught. Also eliminates on of the main drivers of poaching. When I was a kid most of the poachers were trying to put food on the table. Not so today. Today poaching is all about pumping up ones ego and the likes on the gram. Hard to brag when your privileges are revoked.
