6mm /.243 hunting success on Big Game

Before I started hand loading I shot the Winchester 95nbt loads. They worked just fine on deer. This was before I had chronographs, scopes with turrets, and I doubt I had a rangefinder but the ammo worked just as good as my educated loads at the distances I normally shoot deer.....grin

Another bear with the 8 twist .243 tikka. 108 eldm at 3000 fps mv. It was a fleeting opportunity so I gave him the ol’ pucker pop. First shot favored the left cheek just as the bear ran over the hill at about 150 ish yards. Second impact was at 300 ish yards 4” behind the shoulder DRT. First bullet terminated in the left back leg, pretty much destroying that whole leg. Second bullet did not exit but turned in front of the diaphragm into soup. These were “factory second” bullets from midway, if that matters. I was by myself and it was at last light so I did not take any pics of the bullet damage.View attachment 1071528

That’s a very pretty place to hunt anything.

Looking at getting a 6mm creed. Am I correct that out of the same rifle, the 6 creed has a further kill potential over the 6.5cm due to staying above 1800fps longer? I read the whole thread and it is an impressive cartridge. I’ve been racking my brain on getting the 6CM, 6.5CM, or 6.5PRC. It’s for all NA game.

I have a 6CM that is a very accurate rifle.

It’s fun, like video game accuracy.

At 500 yards the wind pushes the 105 Hornady Black and the 107 MK around pretty easily.

I have yet to get a perfect calm day at 500 yards, but have shot multiple 2 shot clusters 1/2 MOA before the 3,4,5 opened up with 2-4 mph wind puffs.

I read that the 156 Berger and 147 EDLm are considerably better at bucking the wind.

If you took all my rifles away and said pick one, the 6.5 PRC is it.
That being said, I don’t have a 6.5 in my stable currently.

Just can’t decide what configuration.

Got to test the 6 creed again on a mature bull this time. 108 eldm at 545 yards. Impact velocity around 2082.

I had to rush the first one because he was just about to get behind a rise and into the trees. That bullet hit him a bit back but he definitely didn’t like what the bullet did to him because he walked about 20 yards and stopped. 2nd Bullet was on the way very quickly and it was perfect. Went through both shoulders and was caught in the offside hide. Bull didn’t make it more than 30 yards total and was dead quick.

My dad has sworn that I’m dumb for hunting strictly with a smaller caliber but he couldn’t argue with this data very much.
