Is anyone else going broke because of deals "you just can't pass up?"

If you have a weakness for a food, don't stock it in your refrigerator. If your spending is out of control, know yourself well enough that you get ahead of the problem. Aggressively remove the things and places that tempt you. Don't be weak-minded. Know the difference between a want and a need. You'll be a better man on the other side.

I have a sell to buy method that keeps me from getting too crazy. I can’t stand having stuff that doesn’t get used. So if I start to feel the need for something else I start going through inventory to see what I can sell to fund the other.

I do this too. I’ve gotten to where I have rifles that have specific hunting or competition uses that I use fairly frequently that are all ultra-premium spec’s, as in there isn’t a dollar that could be spent to upgrade them for my use. I like that much better than having piles of $500-$2000 setups that I don’t use.

I keep myself accountable by trading/selling and treating guns/gear as tools, not collectables/investments. The only time I get in trouble is when I find something for dirt cheap (can buy today and I can easily sell it tomorrow for more money if I don’t like it).

I know if two people who had the gun bug bad. They each would buy at least one gun to per week. One guy was more into historical/collectable guns the other would buy every caliber of a make/model like collecting baseball cards. Both had tons of disposable income though.

I used to when I was younger, thought I had found the best deal ever, many times with intentions of flipping it. I lost money every single time and just ended up with a bunch of useless clutter.

I’m just the opposite now, I still have a bit of decluttering to do, and I’m just focusing on stuff I will actually use or get benefit from.

My moms side of the family has the hoarder gene and both parents sides are suckers for good deals. I look at the examples set and do my best to avoid it. Its not easy but I look at what else I have done with my money and it helps me justify my frugality. Pass deals until you know what you really want, then find a deal on something really worth it. If someone is letting it go that cheap that is what its worth, not more.

Years ago I made $100-500 per month buying and selling used binos. I would either buy local and sell on eBay or vice versa. It was fun to get those great deals. It was equally enjoyable to pass on a good deal to the next guy and make a little $.
I was able to upgrade a lot of my hunting gear with no impact on family finances. I do have to admit it was difficult not holding on to some of those high end binos. But it just didn't make sense at the time.

My illness with buying selling and trading guns started when I was like 16, when I had less than zero money to spend. I’d work all summer and blow most of my earnings on a rifle and scope, then trade it or sell it just a few months later.

Now in my early 30s and I actually make decent money, I still operate like a broke ass teenager. I can’t seem to break the habit of forcing myself to sell something to buy something else. It keeps me to about a 4-5 gun battery that are set up how I want. Kind of a pain in the butt to have the scarcity mindset but it keeps the credit card bills from going crazy.

Yes and no.

Like others have posted, I try to sell a few things to make up for the purchase if I can.

I'll just preface this by saying I'm not doing this to the extent of financial ruin, but I fully understand the desire to jump on deals for things you want.

Prior to last month, I did not have any intentions of buying anything but because of deals I couldn't pass, I bought two pistols, one rifle and two scopes. All things I wanted and would have eventually bought, but jumping on deals when I found them netted me anywhere from 25-55% off.

Sometimes it is very frustrating being a left handed shooter because I can never find exactly what I want. However, I can guarantee that if I were a righty, I would have way more guns, most of which I wouldn’t need or use. I will say though, when I do see something that I’ve been looking for I snatch it up.

i've worked in a gun store for a decade now
rough calculations say i've spend a year's worth of salary on guns and ammo and toys over the past decade
i need to go back to working in a library where i just raided the discard shelf for books and maps.

but think of all the money i've saved on all those guns i don't need!

No, not that I’m aware of. If I find myself getting out of hand I’m pretty good about reining it in. A good strategy is just revamping stuff I already have. Maybe a few low cost “deals” to make something I already have cooler.

Sometimes I think Dave Ramsey's financial advice is out of date and "not the most correct answer"....

You need some Dave Ramsey
