If you had $1500 to spend on a new western hunting setup, what would it be?

That's actually a great thought. Upgrading gear that isn't my weapon. If I didn't have Swaros already, that's probably what I would do.

If I had that kind of money, im upgrading gear to get my pack lighter and more compact. Or to be more comfortable. After that, would be a spotter. But I dont think the OP or most folks need a spotter. Just some retards opinion though.

If I had that kind of $... I would be searching for an Old T/C Omega .50 Cal Stainless and add a specialty custom breech plug with a tungsten carbide bushing , then add a Burris 210511 Fullfield Scope, with Burris Signature Rings, and 3 or 4 8oz or the larger Container of Hodgdon BH209 Powder and 1 K Fed 209A Primers. As I am interested in shooting & hunting with a Muzzleloader these Days
That said I am on a tight budget so I will stick with my Knight DISC Extreme and carry on my hunting & shooting. Social Security does not go that far these days!
But if I had 1500.00 maybe would help...

I’m going to interpret this thread as “$1500 for ONE western hunting set up”

If I had this parameter set for myself I’d buy a T/C Encore(not sure what they go for now but used to be sub $1000 last I checked) in 7mm rem mag and I’d top it with a Leuapold VX3 or VX5 if I was going to go a little above budget.

Want a new caliber in a couple years? No problem but a new barrel and glass and you’re ready to go. And they are tack drivers

I would consider something that’s easy to upgrade or tweak, whether that’s R700 platform/footprints or Tikka. The Eurooptic sauer and tikka deals are pretty nuts, easy to get a good platform for <$700. I’ve come to enjoy the Tikka - but that’s because it is customized a good deal, especially the stock. I’ve got an action that costs more than a lot of guns and while it’s incredible/nice, I’m mentioning that because I am happy using my tikka as well - you can get a really nice setup done with a regular production rifle. Gen 2 Ruger Americans, with a new trigger and stock aren’t a bad option either, a tad more limited on stocks.

Cartridge: If you want a magnum 6.5 PRC is as high as I think is needed. I’m saying this with an 8.5# suppressed 7PRC (R700 custom) setup and an 8# suppressed 6CM (tikka). The 7mm is awesome but it’s way more expensive to shoot, doesn’t have factory “target” ammo (like Hornady black line), and it’s just more to handle - I see that on accuracy front as well as volume can shoot. On the contrary my 6mm is incredibly fun and less expensive to shoot. I get through twice as much each range session - that’s been a real advantage for me personally. 6.5 CM is plenty and readily chambered.

Once you decide it does help others if you post up what you end up trying and what you learned, what worked well and didn’t.

Holy f... - such a trope of dumb advice for a new hunter: "You must buy they newest/latest greatest caliber rifle but u have to replace the trigger and barrel and " blah blah blah.
Buy a Ruger American in .3006 or 270 or .308. Use your vortex scope. Buy a bunch of Remington Cor Loks in 165 gr. Spend some time at the range then get down on your pack after you get it in the bullseye from the table. Buy some $300 boots and if u have any $ left get some freeze dried backpacking food.

Or drink the Kool aid and buy a Tikka in whatever Creedmoor everyone tells u to buy, get a rokstock and a brake and a suppressor and a bipod and sweet custom turret. You won't have any $ left to buy tags or gas but u will be part of the club. Spend your time shooting steel targets at 10000 yards instead.

There's no reason to believe the OP is a new hunter. He just hasn't been a WESTERN hunter.

Also, everyone here has perfectly answered the question that was posed. He didn't ask "what should a new hunter get?" What he asked was "what would YOU do with this money". But don't take it from me. . .

So the question is, if you were in this predicament and were playing with the houses money, what would you buy and why?
