I watched multiple cards get declined. My cred card was declined and I have over 29k available on the card. I paid with my debit card.

The residents getting paid by non res hunters to buy them a tag have screwed that option.

I saw Multiple residents buying 5 tags or more for non res and getting paid to do it.

A F of an F resident was at an out of the way license vendor and ended up #3 in line. First guy bought 40 tags, second guy bought 25….he got nuthin for his buddy.
Saw a lot of this, most of the guys that were first in line that sat for a few days in person were there for "Their Clients"
Yes, you do have to pay, and vendors will print out a few tags before they run a card or collect cash, and credit cards often balk at an irregular charge of a few thousand dollars, especially when it's out of state. It happens to me, and I live in Idaho.

People get sour when they can't get tags, and this can cause them to grossly overexaggerate what they see.
Yes the office just prints the tags to get as many people as possible through, and everyone pays later in a different room, once the line was done (This took double the time it took for 91 people to get the line). I saw quite a few people writing checks 4k-5k was the biggest I saw, but I wasn't watching close what so ever.

This happened to me, too. Two of my rewards-earning cards with $0 balance were declined, and then to make it better, after I paid debit and left, the credit card companies each sent a text with two reply options to either process the charge or report the card stolen so they could deactivate it. I then had to call each company to tell them to keep the charge declined and the card activated.

Not everyone buys at the IDFG office, which has a special line for purchases for 5+ people. Yes, other vendors will print $4-$5k before they charge, but that's for probably 4 or 5 people's tags, maybe more if a lot of those are only getting deer tags. It's not 25 or 40, etc.

Pre-authorization on large purchases keeps that from happening. Most cards it can be done with an app but some you need to call in.

Talked with a friend at F&G last night. He said people had been waiting at his office since Sunday and in Salmon they had been waiting since LAST Wednesday. Outside the door. Zero degree lows.

That’s dedication…
Dedication and people getting paid to buy tags for others.

I think it will backfire on some guys when they have a hard time collecting the money from the guy that had them stand in line. When Idaho G&F starts getting calls like, "I bought this tag for a guy I have never met and now I'm out $700 on my CC, can I turn it in?"....IDFG will figure it out their system is getting scammed by people trying to make a buck.

Solved by Committee? Their Committee on Non Res tags is a bit of a joke from what I hear....my source says there are no Non Res on the committee.

Its easily solved, My advice to IDGF;

1) Do the online and in person sales.

2) Pay the vendors a little more or let them add a small surcharge- my guess is they lose money on these transactions

3) Make the in person sales purchases by Residents for non res family only

4) Make non residents be there in person to purchase.

That would not only solve everything and ADD to the Idaho economy. After Flights most guys go out to eat multiple times, have a few drinks, rent a car, stay in a motel, buy stuff- they could literally add millions to the Idaho economy in one day.

What's even crazier is that some people pay others to take them hunting. It's insanity.

The fact that Idaho has created a niche market where you can pay someone to stand inline and buy multiple tags for other people is really telling of just how much they care about a fair and equal draw. The state has some serious issues and license sales is definitely one of them.

That's what I tell everyone! Definitely some questionable characters here too. Best to avoid it if at all possible.

Congratulations to those that got tags.

I did not this year. Had a pretty high number, there were only a few (not very desirable to me) options left. Eventually I psyched myself up for a panhandle tag, then screwed up by hitting the "refresh" button and it kicked me back to the que. Oops.

I first hunted Idaho in 2007. Not that long ago. You could drive to Idaho the day you wanted to hunt and buy any OTC tag you wanted (as I recall). The woods were relatively empty. No side by sides.

To see the demand for these tags soar in that time period has been incredible. Extrapolate that trend 15-20 years from now and it seems where we are going isn't going to be pretty. I'd be surprised if there were any general elk opportunities in 20 years-even for residents.

I think western hunting is a fad that will eventually die down, it has gotten popular with social media and shows like meateater going on netflix. Duck hunting blew up when duck commander was a popular show, duck hunting now seems to be less popular than it was 10 years ago.
We get hit with another recession like 2008 and people can’t afford to come out west to hunt then the insanity will stop.

The vendor I was at limited it to 2 tags per person. I'm a nonresident, and just bought 1 tag for myself. Just about everyone else were residents buying for their buddies.

Were you one of them? Lol. Really nice guys.
If you were up there in CDA those older fellas were able to get everyone their tags. Buddy said his dad drove over Sunday and was out in line since Sunday. Some serious retirement dedication. IMO when people hunt the same area for 30 plus years and put money into a dump of a town and pay property taxes they should get their tags!
