I wish the 300 WSM would get it's relaunch (300 PRC 2?) Every caliber got remade but the 30 cal...

You can shoot 180's at 3,000fps in a 300WSM and 300SAUM in a short action.

You don't need a updated twist rate to shoot 180's.

Realistically, your not going to get any real improvement on those in a short action for a .30cal. It takes powder capacity to move big bullets. The 300 SAUM real world is dang near a creedmoor case, dimensionally very close, but a bit fatter. Your not gonna squeeze anything more out of a short action case....especially a standard bolt face, short action.

This is the same reason why their isn't a 7mm creedmoor. The case capacity just isn't there to push the big bullets.

Hornady actually talked about it in one of their podcasts. 7mm and 30 cal got the PRC case because the short action (creedmoor) case just wasn't gonna bring the goods for the heavy for caliber bullets.

Search up thr 300 super wsm projects on the vortex nation podcast.
Basically running a 300wsm in a medium/long action, 1/8 twist barrel and 200+ grain projectiles.

To "update it" the ammo manufacturers would probably have to re-do the Sammi spec before the gun manufacturers got on board and they probably couldn't do that simply because some people can't be trusted not to mess up and try to use the up spec version of factory ammo In the "old spec" rifles.
**think 6 arc factory ammo being downloaded to suit AR pressures despite a decent bolt gun market.

Your best bet if youre really keen might be to find a bunch of 300wsm lapua brass- several barrels worth, then do a custom build, get a couple barrels chambered at the same time.
It's a substantial investment for maybe not a lot of gain over something else that has factory ammo support and likely to have tons of components available long term.

**It seems that a lot of people are shying away from heavy hitting 30 cal magnums and maybe the market can't support that

My factory tikka 300wsm has a 10 twist and is throated long enough to seat a berger 215 at 3.25 coal. I chopped it to 20" and am planning on shooting the 215s but I haven't actually done any load development yet.

What powder are you using with 200.20x. I’ve been using them for several years in a stock Tikka at 2800 fps with H4350. Have H4831sc and 7828ssc to mess with on my next brass cycle. I’m having the barrel shortened to 20” from stock 24.3” so I will loose some velocity even if my load holds.
I’m only looking for 800 yard performance window so I should be right in there, but having a little extra low end velocity doesn’t hurt.
I’m using RL16 for a 208 ELD-M 2850 fps coal 2.97 just goes in Hawkins hunter mag in a 20” 1-8 barrel. Wife smoked a bull this year 485 yards. I’ve owned one since they came out and will always own one they are poison on game.

AS was mentioned earlier in the thread the 300 Super WSM is a standard chamber on a medium action with a 1 in 8 twist barrel. You can still shoot any 300 WSM load but can take advantage of the longer bullets.

My lowly 11 twist 300 wsm shoots 180s a hair over 3,000 fps.

Lots of guys seems to need the latest and greatest or whatever but I don’t think the 300 wsm is going away. I think there’s enough of us in the “we have what we need” camp? I could be wrong I spose.

Our 300 shorts have tipped over a fairly remarkable number of animals with no signs of letting up.. they just flat work.

This thread really makes me want to get my .300 wsm cut and threaded for my suppressor. It's fun but it is deafening with a 23" barrel

I see the 300WSM and the 375 Ruger as great cartridges that could be made greater with only a small change. That small change, however, undercuts one of the cartridge’s selling points.
The 300WSM in a 2.86” magazine works well. It just does cooler things in a 3.2” magazine. Maybe it capability that the target audience didn’t need.
The 375 Ruger in a 3.4” magazine is an amazing round. However if you give it room in a 3.6” or 3.7” magazine, your powder choices widen. Your velocity potential is higher. It just looks right.

In the video I posted it works very well for them.

Correct, they never took any credit for it at all.
I swear I watched a video that some guys made a "super wsm" and used that bullet and it just penciled right through all the gel without expanding time after time. Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly.

You didn't dream. They were having expansion issues using clear gel. Once they switched to real ballistic gel it all worked out.
