Go with a Knight. Those vorteks have been known to have issues regarding reliable ignition from what I've read. A nice, more budget friendly gun is a T/C Black Diamond XR. I have a knight and a t/c. T/C shoots great but the fit and finish is nowhere close to my Knight Disc Extreme.

I have the CVA wolf. It is light, compact, easy to use/clean and less than half the price of the other two guns mentioned. They might shoot better scoped, but if you have to use open sights I think your eyes will always be the limiting factor when using a modern muzzleloader. They are for me anyway.

It is my understanding that if you can't use sabots a longer conical does better with the fast 1:28 twist. Some here use big heavy (long) lead conicals. Others like me use the all copper 300 grain Thor. Being copper and having a substantial hollow base, it it pretty long for a 300 grain slug. And there isn't a muzzleloader bullet with a better ballistic coefficient. It shoots great for me.

Muzzleloaders are a blast to shoot. You'll have fun no matter what setup you choose.

I have a CVA Accura and it is a great gun. Probably the most accurate weapon I own, within sensible muzzleloader distances of course, and is a pleasure to shoot.

I dont know how much experience you have with muzzleloaders but cleaning is an absolute necessity. Harsh chemicals arent required either as good ole hot soapy water is best.

Buy yourself a Knight! The Ultralite is a very sweet setup with the northwest kit only a small portion of the breech is exposed to the elements. I am wrapping up a article on this gun here in the next couple weeks that you will be able to read here on the slide soon. Take care

If you use BH209 do not use water to clean it.

I had a Black diamond and did not have that good of luck with it. In fact, I wont be buying T/C ever again. I currently have a Winchester X-150 made by CVA and this thing is fantastic. Very accurate and very dependable. I plan on buying a CVA wolf for my son. I really like the accuracy and Quality of the CVA. I would love to pick up an Accura for myself but do not have the need as the X-150 is so good.

Was not aware of that! Thanks.

Out of my CVA Accura I've had best performance with White Hot from IMR and they clean up with water. I've also used 777 in the past in other guns and it cleans up with water.

BH209 is the only one that you have to use regular solvents with I believe.

Ole Hunter,

Since it appears that you will be hunting with a ML in Oregon you will not be able to use BH because you need to use cap ignition and you will need to shoot full bore lead conicals with open sights.

The people that have suggested a Knight Ultra-Lite with a Western Edition installed are really suggesting a really good reliable rifle. The 50 cal. will come with 1-28 twist and it will shoot conicals very well.

I actually have two of these rifles and really enjoy both of them. This one is setup for ML hunting here in Idaho where we have basically the same rules as Oregon. This setup weighs in at around 6.5 lbs. It really is a light weight but powerful gun.

This one is setup for hunting during the regular rifle season.

They come with a lightweight Kevlar stock that has an aluminum bedding block built into the stock.

This thread might give you some additional information.

Or you might just do a forum search for Knight Ultra-Lite. I have posted a lot of information on the rifle.

One last thought... if the price is not what you might want to pay for a very seasonal rifle - then also take a good look at a Knight DISC Extreme. They are really a very good rifle also....

I have a Knight Mountaineer that would be completely legal in your state. I hunted Colorado which requires conicals and it shoots 1" groups with a peep sight, so great accuracy. I used the PR Bullet conicals and they loaded fine. NOt a lightweight gun, but shoots well and is adaptable to 209 if you hunt a state that allows it.

You will like the CVA. Use the BH209 and try different bullets. I hunt in CO so no scope and no sabot bullet. I can hit a 12in circle at 200yds time and time again.
