How Will Vehicles Change With New Government Regulations

I've been semi in the market for a new truck for a little while. Now that we have a new administration in the white house, how do you see vehicles changing in the coming years? When would you pull the trigger on a purchase?

Depends on what shape your rig is in now and how badly you want a new vehicle, and how much disposable income you have.

Me personally, and not addressing the politics in either direction, I would wait 2-3 years unless it is a need instead of a want.

Trucks have gotten stupid expensive because they are basically the current status symbol/ luxury vehicle. This combines with the easy money of covid and the supply chain shortages has caused an imbalance in the vehicle market that will likely be correcting over the next couple of years.

I am generally not a fan of playing the timing game but think this is an instance that waiting is justified.

Then again all my vehicles are over 20 years old, but with regular maintenance they are reliable and I like not having a TV screen in my dash.

I expect there won’t be any changes. Development for a new truck is usually 4-5 years so a change now won’t show up quickly. The whiplash over changing administrations is a lot and there is a good chance it might go back the other way in 4-8 years. As a manufacturer that’s not something you want to chase. With 4-5 Years to design, test, tool, a design it needs to run for 8-10 years after that to have decent roi.

I would love for the government to get out of pushing EV's period. I would also like for them to take the Def out of diesels. I would also like them to stop raising the company gas mileage rate so that companies stop trying to force EV down our throats.

I still don't understand why the environmental impact of mining for added lithium for those huge batteries, the impact of disposing of the batteries, the impact of cost of replacing a battery on consumers, etc. is even being studied.

There wont be any changes due to new admin. MSRP increases will continue but maybe slower. Manufactures will use incentives to lower costs to buyers. Rebates and low interest financing will be available.

We are kidding ourselves if we think we are going to see any considerable lowering of prices by manufactures. Never has happened.

I stopped buying the top of the line option packages on my last truck after decades of thinking I needed to have highest level of trim. I have been more than happy with a mid grade trim and fewer options. I needed a new and reliable truck. I just wanted all the bling. I wasn't trying to impress anyone but myself so I didnt see it as a status thing. I been just as happy with this truck.

Its time for new one and I will be looking to do the same mid level trim. Thats how I am spending a lot less and getting what I need.

im so tired of the direction vehicles esp midsize trucks are going in the US. All the electronics, sensors, and crap on them is awful. Seems like anything 2021 or newer will not be as reliable as those trucks built prior to 2020.

Everyone is getting paid off. It's like trying to understand why we would build all of the infrastructure in Afghanistan to mine Lithium, then hand it over to the Chinese. I wonder who got paid for that?

I work in the automotive industry for a extremely large tier 1 in a leadership role. Nothing is really going to change in the next few years. The timing cycle to develop a vehicle and launch it is years. For instance we are working on a certain high end European suv right now it has took 3 years since award to design, build molds, trials, testing, etc..this vehicle once launched has a 7 year life (most all vehicles do). The korean oems do it the fastest they can do it in about a year but I would not own anything they make. So other than some small tweaks to vehicles cosmetics everything has been decided.

Toward the end of his presidency you may see some shifts if the OEMs feel like the right is going to stay in office.

On time to buy... the tariffs that are coming will drive the price up. They have too. no vehicle assembled in USA has all parts from USA in fact a significant portion of parts come from Canada. Mexico. And overseas. I agree with what he bis doing it will bring the jobs back but it will be some short term pain.

2006 before they started locking out programming. The diesels of that day can run really clean and plenty of power. As far as gas goes, I programmed my jku 2013. factory mpg dismal 14 or so. Put a tune in it 33'' tire winch 2 " lift 3.73 gears now I get 18-19. Well worth the $300 tune. That said why do I need a 85k jeep or 110K truck. I'll drive what I have til they qiut making parts for them. You have to get a morgage to by a vehicle, that's crazy.

It's what I did with my last truck purchase. Bought a brand new 2023 Ram 2500 Tradesman. The lowest trim from Ram and saved $1,000’s! It’s been a great truck.

I’ve thought I wanted the higher end trims as well, thinking I wanted the creature comforts but then I’ve come to realize all those creature comforts means there’s more things to break or wear out! Who needs a seat massager while they’re driving? I’m sure it’s nice but again, it’s just one more thing to break!

I agree the mid level trims are the way to go! If you’re patient enough, you can find the lower end trims with some of the mid level options for a fraction of the price!

Buy a 5 yo vehicle and drive it for 10-15 years. Buy new and it’s like you’re just throwing money in the burn bit.

IMO a 5 yo used truck is about what they’re worth. WAY overpriced new.

Almost 20 years old, did spend some cheddar on some new led headlights for the old girl lol. Luckily found them on sale for 450 dollars which is insane compared to the 1000 they ask. Not a big deal when ya don’t have a payment and insurance is cheap.

I built the same exact truck for the 2025 model and it’s 87k. Hard pass. I will keep paying cash for older ones that run forever and make tons of power. People are stupid paying 60/80/100k for vehicles that instantly loose money the first time you drive it off the lot.

Personally, if we are to get any rollback of emission BS our best chance is now. With the recent chevron deference ruling and current leadership it would be phenomenal to see challenges and subsequent rulings against the EPA regarding DEF and DPF requirements as well as the ban on deletes and tuning.

I think that's still a long shot but it's a shorter shot than any time recently in the past.

There are already rumors of DPF requirements for gasoline engines in the future so the ship may be way too far gone.
