I agree on holding zero , but tracking is unnecessary if your not relying on turrets or a calulator for environmental impact and use rote memory that Can only be imbedded by practice and prudence

So a scope that doesn’t track like it was designed to is not garbage?

I have stated this before but the first two and so far only two sheep of my life were shot with a used BSA 30.06 with a Bushnell Sportview 4x scope. Believe it or not cheap scopes work too. Both rams were about 150 yard shots. I would not use that scope now but I do have a Burris fullfield 2 on my tikka that is going sheep hunting this fall. I trust this scope because I have used them for about 20 years and every one holds zero for me. At the end of the day the OP is the guy with the tag. If he wants to hunt with a Vortex that is his choice ,hope he gets a good Ram.

And this makes it a preferred choice on top of any rifle?

Shouldn’t take much to go blast a farm animal , go for your walk and kill your mutton

always fun here on the slide lol. can't count how many guys I've sat next to with their fancy scopes and gadgets yet have to walk in a 500 yd shot. hate to break it to you guys, but if you can't shoot, money won't fix it. if you're a hunter that has a habit of dropping things, then the scope isn't the problem.
as for the OP, besides what has been said Id say prepare yourself for 12,000 ft. its not the gun or gear that makes a shooter, if you cant catch your breath or calm down then the shot will be off. its a bit different at high altitude. good luck.

I know, the Whites are about which ram and shot. Not worried about 600 yard shots.

Awesome tag, very jealous!

It makes sense to stick with what you know and are comfortable with in terms of weapons and range. Pretty short amount to time to mess with learning to dial, ballistics, etc. I would highly recommend a different scope though. Something like the nightforce SHV 3-10 with a duplex reticle.

Went on a hard to draw Ca backpack deer hunt with my uncle a few years back at 10-12k feet. He missed several bucks on easy shots which was later found to be his leupold that had lost zero and was shooting 2 feet high at 100 yards.

You’re either going to be backpacking or horseback riding in. Your vortex might loose zero on the bumpy truck ride to the trailhead, let alone on horseback.

Hell if you want you can borrow my nightforce 3-10 for this hunt as long as you send my a pic and some good luck my way to eventually draw this tag myself!

Guys. Not worried about my shooting with my 1956. Model 70, old school set up. Killed critters@500. And I won't shoot beyond 300. My guide said which ram do you want. Heck, if it wasn't the whites, I would bowhunt. Elevation? My ol .270 will do just fine. Don't need all the tricked out crap. Just confuses me. Like bowhunting. All good to 80 yards. I know my personal range and will do this with my supergrade .270, like my grizz. Don't need humidity, elevation, spin, wind drift. My ram will be smoked when I pull the trigger. Not concerned. That's why I bowhunt, all this moa, blah, turns me off. I watch gunners, that take these long range shots. Why? You can't inside 200 yards? All show bs. Again, beyond 400 yards, it's shooting, not hunting. My imo.

Can’t disagree with your ethos of keeping shots at a reasonable range. Still, I would get something sturdy on top of that nice rifle..your vortex is just waiting to shit the bed on your perfect 200 yard broadside shot

Born wi. Boy, all optics are vortex, never had an issue. You think if I fall and bang a swarkis it will fair better then vortex? It will be a 300 yard shot. That's a chip shot.

I drew a really good NV elk tag last year. Late season. I also drew a Shiras moose tag. Lucky for sure, but I knew my time would be limited and I wanted to focus on the moose. I hunted the moose tag (successfully) DIY. When it came to the elk tag, I had no first hand knowledge of the unit and limited time so I hired a guide. When I got there I was blown away by how the hunt would play out. Hunting burn areas, 8-12” of old crunchy snow on the ground, cross canyon shots. I thought we’d be hunting down low on easy alfalfa fields. Nope, not even close. My guide said his late hunts are generally 5-700 yard shots. I was prepared (killed my bull at 620) but while there I listened to the guide take a couple of phone calls from other hunters who showed up DIY and wanted to hire him once they realized they were un prepared and under gunned. Both conversations were with guys and traditional type .270’s and 30-06. Nothing wrong with those at all, but they expected a “typical” hunt of 1-300 yd type shots. That wasn’t happening, especially not if you wanted to kill the caliber of bull to do the tag justice. My guide told me at least 3/4 of their hunters end up using their guns. Hunting has changed.
Everyone had to know their rifle and bow effective range. I am solid to 70 with a bow and 500 with a rifle. If not, always tomorrow.

Killed many moose. Caribou, elk, and so cal. Deer over 400 yards with my .270. Not concerned about this sheep hunt beyond only bowhunting for 50 years, I will burn a lot of bench ammo out to 500. Will not wound ram, he will be a 1 shot kill or I won't take the shot.

Good luck and congratulations on the tag! High elevation for desert sheep. Take a few days before season getting used to the it. I’ve seen a lot of folks hurting above 8 or 9,000’ elevation. And 12 is way up there if you live just above sea level.

Your .270 will work fine, just like it has for the past 88 years.

As an aside I killed a NV NR bighorn at 35 yds with my bow in 1991. Pre-rangefinder days in a remote unit. Sheep were spooky but I arrowed a 10 yr old.

If you think your Vortex is in the same league as a NF or Swaro, you deserve whatever comes your way. Yes, a NF or Swaro WILL take more of a beating than that Vortex....a LOT more. That is undisputable. 300 yards isnt a chip shot with a failed scope...neither is 50. You might not get that ram, but you sure will get another warrantied Vortex scope....LOL.

Not concerned. Did the Jmt@61. 22 days, 50,000 vertical climbing. Already dropped 12 lbs. Will be in sheepshead, then roll into x5b bow@7k feet. 60 days out.
