help with action screw bottoming out???

One more thing: I do understand how you might think that your action screw runs out of threading when twisting upward into the receiver. If so, the front of your trigger guard won't be quite snug.

you could be right about this. the bolt head seems to sink deeply into its pocket in the bottom metal and the bottom metal doesn't seem to be loose. So maybe all is good now that the screw is not making contact with the bolt lug.
I mainly asked here to make sure i wasn't missing anything.

Figured so...there's plenty of spare threading length on a Rem action screw.

Seems you're on your way toward getting things dialed in. I put a dab of nail polish on the business end of action screws, fwiw. Will also say that relying on a torque recommendation does more trouble than good. The feel method is foolproof for an aluminum block or solid glass bed job. I get both front and back screws to about 90%, then tight till it stops in front (done), then tighten the rear till snug minus back off 1/8" to 1/4" turn max.

Since shortening the screw from protruding Into the action and contacting the lug I think you should be good to go.
Id go shoot it again and see what your groups are like now also.

If you look into the finished action, you can see the threads for the screw on a 700. If they touch the bolt....your accuracy will suffer. IMAG0384_zpsbae596e2.jpg

Thanks for all the help. Determined that the front action screw is NOT bottoming out. I do believe that it was originally making contact with the bottom bolt lug at least at some point.
I will continue to try and get this thing to shoot some good groups. I did get a somewhat promising group with some HSM ammo. First two were touching but the third flew out to about 1”. It was the 6th shot. So hopefully it may have been from heating up. Will be trying it again tmrw. Will update afterwards.

Just out of the blue she woke up a little today.
