If you share the same love/hate relationship with the AR platform as I do, a short barreled 6.5 Grendel should do well. At least it has for me for hogs and deer out to 200yrds. Not sure what factory offerings are out right now. In order to get what you want it may involve rolling your own, if you’re into that sort of thing. I’ve got a 12” BA barrel on mine and strangely enough it has been the most accurate AR of any caliber I’ve owned.

I have really been debating a 12" barrel for a 6.5 Grendel build. Load up some Barnes bullets and it could be a real slayer SBR rig. Guess I will put it on the Black Friday watch list.

Lot of guys running Wilson Combat's 300 HAM'R on hogs. Really nice velocity jumps compared to 300 BLK (really more designed for supers more than subs) and BLK might be a little better with shorter barrels. Still uses standard AR15 bolts but 300 BLK mags do work better.

I’ve been shooting a 6.5G on hogs at night for the past 3-4 years. It has an 20” barrel and I use an AAC 762SDN6 can on it. My thermal is a 640 core Pulsar XP50. I’m in the process of building a 12” upper and should have all my parts sourced this month. My experience is the 6.5G absolutely hammers them. I shoot the Hornady black.

In the daytime I just carry a Marlin 30-30 with a scout scope setup shooting Hornady 160FTX.

I've only taken two hogs, so not an expert by any means. I used my 6.5G ar build and a 6.5CM tikka bolt gun. Going to try the 6 ARC using an ar build and also a Uintah bolt upper this April.

I once thought about a Benelli R1 (.308) with an 16-18" barrel. Something like:

Inspired by:

Browning BAR Short Trac .308 Win. We took a standard short trac BAR and cut the bbl down to 16” and fitted one of our Whisper suppressors. Re-tuned the gas system and worked the trigger pull over. Topped it with a Trijicon 3-9×40 Accupoint green dot crosshair scope in lightweight Talley rings and ended up with one sweet rig. Lightweight, accurate and VERY light recoil with the proven performance of the .308 Win. Cartridge. Light recoil, accurate and follow-up shot firepower, what’s not to like? It’s a LOT lighter and handier than an AR-10 platform .308.

Really depends on how far out you're reaching. I'm using a 6mm Remington setup currently in a bolt gun. Far from ideal. I'd like to switch to an AR10 243 platform eventually, but have too much ammo to burn through on my current 6mm to make it worth while for now.

An ar in 6.5 Grendel seems to be about perfect for me. Fast fallow up shots and plenty of knock down power for the bigger ones.
