I bought a couple Zebralight Z-51 (which now looks to be the Z-52 model for this year) and for an in camp near the tent or digging stuff out of yoru pack its a great option. But I'm going a different route now for guiding my path in the dark to get me off the mountain....for actual hiking on anything but a trail in the dark it is grossly underpowered IMO.

Sounds like you need to get your hands on the H600 and a good 3400mah battery. 100yds plus, no problem on high and low mode will last for days

Another question, I see on the zebra light website they have options for "cool white" or "neutral white".

Wondering what the difference is? They're all LED so they all suck for following blood, just wondering what the difference is.

Whats important to me is:

Has to be bright
Has to be decent on batteries
Has to be water resistant or proof
Would like it light weight.
Be cool if it had lots of different settings i.e. high beam, low beam, strobe, different colors capable

The Princeton Tec Vizz fits most of your list. I have had mine for a year now and its worked fine, but I have never tested the waterproof aspect of it.

Sounds like Zebra is the one to look at. Appreciate the feedback all.

Do a search here, some good threads on the zebras. I only run zebra anymore, my 600w and 51w together weigh less then my old black diamond icon did. They have zero bulk compared to most and put out some crazy light. The 600w I have put out a spot light that goes to 100 yards on max but even at a trickle of power they put out minimal lumens.

The 51 takes 1aa and the 600 a special batt but I have never needed to replace it since the 51 is mostly used. Not only are they crazy bright but no bulky battery pack on the back of your head.

I just got the Black Diamond Spot that chevy dog mentioned. It's great. I've been running a Princeton Tec for 5 years and it's been great but it's pretty simple. This one just has all the options you mentioned wanting and is brighter.

Wow! I too am in the market for a new light and think I'm sold on the ZebraLight. Looks like the H600 is now an H600 Mk II and puts out an INSANE 1090 lumens! Here is a link to comparison of all their models. I like the idea of a unit with AA, but the H600 Mk II really has me thinking. Maybe an HF52w or similar also. I had not really considered Zebra before this thread. Looked at Petzl, Princeton Tec, BD, etc. but I'm really in love with this Zebra idea now.

Energizer Industrial 6 LED light. Don't laugh, but I've had it for 5 years and it works like a champ. I'll probably upgrade it for something brighter though.

Wrench is hooking me up with a Zebra light 502h trade for one of my pouches. So looks like I filled this need. Thread has been great and has definitely given me more info on Head Lamps that are out there. Good stuff.

I have had a petzl myo something or other.

Awesome lamp. Battery life is awesome. Runs on AA batteries, which is what all my other electronics run on so it helps consolidate batteries.

Not waterproof, which I would like but it hasn't died on me yet in the rain.

Oh yea the built in diffuser is sweet as well.

Another vote for the Petzl Myo XP, great light. Hard to accidentally turn on, flood and spot modes and very good battery life.
