If you're not going to do a full-on good job refinish I would leave it, or pay someone to do it. If you put some elbow grease into it it can look amazing, but it's very easy to take a old finish and turn it into an abomination, so be eyes-wide-open going into it.
You will need to remove the pad, sling studs, and any other parts, strip all the finish off, steam any dents out, then raise the grain and very lightly sand to smooth it, seal the wood, then use a finish to fill the pores, then topcoat it. It's not hard, but it's a crap-load of work to do right and it takes a while. The stripping and wood prep and then pore-filling is the majority of the work, it'll take going slow, a lot of elbow grease, finish stripper, a lot of fine-grit wet/dry sandpaper, a fresh can of finish, some fine and medium scotch brite pads, some old yogurt cups or similar, a roll of paper towels and some rubbing compound. Also, if you're going to bed it or install pillars, do that before you refinish it.
The butt pad has 2 screws holding it to the wood. there may only be slits in the rubber rather than holes, so they may be hard to see, but those pads did not come glued on. I highly doubt its glued on, but it should come off for a refinish.
the fe tip and the grip cap are either glued on (part of the stock) or there is a screw holding it on. The FE tip is almost certainly glued on and should be left as-is for a refinish. The grip cap may be the same, or it may have a screw--should be visible. If no screw, leave it.
Let me know if you want and I can describe how I've done this. there are as many ways to do it as there are people doing so, but there's some basics. Shouldnt be too hard to find good resources online either. Turnbull has some youtube videos on refinishing with spar urethane, I havent watched but they do good work so would imagine its good info. this is pretty good, it picks up assuming you're already stripped and completely prepped the wood:
