I believe those are just greys (blacks). They come up before the Yellows. Taste the same.

Those are black morels and are fine to eat. Learn the difference between morels and false morels and you will be fine.

False morels barely look like morels.

False morels are solid instead of hollow, so if your not sure you can split in half and look.

False morels I’ve seen also seem to have a powder on the stem. I’m sure there are other kinds though.

Audubon society field guide to North American mushrooms has color, shape, size, location, habitats and spore info....its a good field guide to use.

There are several morel groups on Facebook as well that will be decent info, but some of those people are more risky than I.

here's another hint, carry a pocket knife, and cut the stem off rather than pulling up the root, less dirt to clean off and in your bag and you also leave the root in the ground which some say help more to grow

The false morels around here have hair in the stem. People still eat them with no reactions and they say they taste great. Looks like the ones you have are true morels.

Some people (like me) have some allergic reactions to real morels. Alcohol can be a trigger. If I drink 1 beer with my mushrooms I will sneeze and have a runny nose all night. But oh it’s worth it.

To start, I am a morel hunting newbie that has yet to find any actual morels. Just found this in the yard today (6,000 ft and there are narrowleaf cottonwoods nearby) but both people I know who have at least some experience with morels say this is likely not a morel. I looked up false morels and this doesn't look like those either. Can anyone help identify?

You are correct, not a Morel.
That would be a Phallaceae, otherwise known as a Stinkhorn

Thanks for the ID. To me those look more like morels than false morels do. Glad I didn't smell it.

Cut them open and make sure they are hollow all the way through. True morels are also attached to the stem at the base of the cap whereas false have a step that runs to the top, forming a hood.
