Yes, @wildwilderness. Can range from grey to black to yellow. False morels tend to look more reddish to me, generally, and a lot fatter and squat than a true or half free morel. The folds also tend to be less geometric and more rounded, and the stem is usually solid or full of a fiber like material. We have a lot of people who eat false morels here in Missouri and claim to suffer no ill effects, but I won't eat one and wouldn't advise anyone to eat them either.
Best of luck...the habit can be addicting. You'll find there are LOTS of ways to predict when the mushrooms have started to pop...red buds, may apples...etc...IMO the BEST way is when you start to see them show up fors sale online!
