I assure you that a Tundra with horrible mileage will be far cheaper to maintain and refuel than a modern emissions diesel.

Nate, I have no good reason to switch. The Toyota is so damn small and I want something a little more full size. I would look at the Tundra but the MPG suck on them.

Wait for the 2015 or 2016 tundra with a cummins, or checkout the 2015 nissian Titan with the same cummins that will be in the tundra. the dodge 1/2 Eco diesel is getting close to 30mpg. So I would think the tundra and Nissan with the cummins will be similar.

Also Chevy is coming out with a diesel in the 2016 Chevy Colorado, my father in-law just got the new body style and it has more room then the tacoma.

No reason to get a 3/4 ton if your not towing and the 1/2 dodge has had good reviews and the motor has been used for years in Europe but I still would prefer the cummins tundra or Titan.

Lots of truth in that statement. I loved my 2006 6.0 and only had one issue with hydraulic leak down which was repaired under warranty. It got 23mpg until it had an EGR reprogram recall and mileage and power went to crap, plus oil changes and fuel filter replacements cost an arm and a leg. You can "bulletproof" the engine and replace the head studs which would probably cost as much as a built auto tranny in a Dodge w/ a Cummins which you'll have to do eventually.
I would not buy a hot rodded truck, period. Diesel power is intoxicating but if you're not going to tow heavy and tow regularly I'd get a gasser. Two of my friends have V10's with over 200k and they're still going strong. My hunting rig is a 90 F250 w/ a 351 and I spend all of my time in the right lane but I'm not in a hurry and when that engine finally let's go, I'll buy another one with a 460 and drive it until it blows up and repeat.

I miss the size of the 90's and 2000's Tacomas. These new "mid size" trucks are about the size of the full size trucks in the 90's.

I have driven all the mentioned Fords in my work trucks over the last 20 yrs, and personally won't own one. It's only because that's what my company buys. I do have a 2001 Dodge cummins with 6 spd manual transmission (210000 mi) and a 2010 Dodge 6.7l cummins also with 6 spd manual (65000) and both have been virtually trouble free. I average around 17-18 mpg in the '10 and about 20mpg in the '01. I've used em and abused em. Both are hunting rigs. I'm happy with them!

The 6.4 is a good motor to have, it has the potential for good mileage has good power and doesn't have the same black eye that the 6.0 has. The only cation I give anyone buying a used diesel regardless of what the brand is to make sure the owner has not hotroded it with programmers and such. If that is the case then it is always going to be buyer beware. Maintenance is also crucial with all of these new motors, neglect will cause issues eventually. One critical area that most over look is some sort of fuel cleaners to help save and clean the injectors fuel pump and injector pump. Today's fuels are crap and do not provide enough lube to the injectors and pumps.

A 6.4 has just as many, if not more, issues as a 6.0. A 6.4 is just a modified 6.0. Engine temperature is the killer with these engines.
Buy either one and plan on probably putting a bunch of $$ into repairs. Do it right and have a bombproof engine afterwards.

I dont necessarily agree with this. I have 175000 on mine and with proper maintenance and knowledge if the motor, the 6.0 is a fantastic motor.

If you come across o.net e I can help you look for the right things.
Avoid the 6.0 !

There's a lot of info on this thread and all over the internet from people who don't have much hands on experience or technical knowledge of the vehicles. Be careful who you take advice from -JMO

That said, I agree with some of the above comments, go for a newer diesel or a newer half ton. I wouldn't buy any older diesel from any manufacturer unless your willing to work on it.

Ya, but the 7.3L is so much easier to work on.

Hey WapitiBob.......you still on your original up-pipes? I replaced mine at about 130k with the IH bellowed ones and no problems since. Everything else on your list is pretty accurate though.......but I'm still on the original clutch at 175k, and the glow plugs are due. What's the trak bar that you speak of?

Had a few of The Dodges with the 5.9 Cummins (03,05 and a 07). Stock, got 16 mpg. Chopped up I got 20-22 mpg with crazy hp. Until I blew injectors. Got sick of getting towed in so I run the trucks stock now.
In 09 I picked up my first F250 with the 6.4.. 14 mpg and less power than the dodges had. Got rid of that and picked up another f250. An 2013 with the 6.7. Only have 51,000 on her but getting 18 mpg and better power than all of the above mentioned when run stock. Nothing other than general maintenance and fuel filters every 15,000-20,000.

This is what I am waiting for! 300 HP is all I will need and mileage should be better than the ford too!

i agree with all the guys saying that if you dont need a diesel to get a gas. if you cant haul it with a gas hog you will be a diesel convert.

lots of times guys will brag to me about how their gas truck will do anything a diesel will do. then a year latter they have a one ton dually with a diesel. quite possibly the new line of half ton diesels will fall into this category.

If you don't NEED the diesel DON'T buy one! I own an F350 with a 6.4 and owned an F250 with the 7.3. I've had more problems with the 6.4, but it's components and not the motor itself. We have almost 200k on it and the mileage sucks. Get about 13-14 mpg. The 7.3 was trouble free for almost 200k except for a power train control module. Mileage was about 17. Cost of ownership is much higher on a diesel. Initial purchase price, fuel and maintenance are all more expensive.
If you want a larger more powerful truck and don't NEED the diesel get an F150, Silverado, Ram or Tundra with a V8. Much more fuel efficient, nimble and often a much more comfortable everyday vehicle.

yes to the pipes.
As you can see from my list I spent a whole lot of time/money working on my rig over the last 15 years and 355,000 miles. The single biggest pain in the butt was the dipstick mount.

Google f350 trak bar.
Solid front axle, leaf spring truck, so they weld a bracket to the axle housing and opposite side frame, then bolt a solid bar to the brackets. Every time the axle moves up or down the bar tries to shift the axle housing to the side, putting side load on the spring hangers and the bar mounts that were welded on. It tries to tear itself apart every bump in the road. Eventually the welds break and one end of the bar drops to the road.

Good point, I forgot the new 1/2 tons are rated to tow more than my old 3/4 ton. :(

I have some ag and construction experience but I'm not a mechanic. That means this is worth what you paid for it.
If you want more space, it doesn't get much better than a super duty. I have lived out of mine for days at a time and it drives like a dream. There are exceptions to every rule but I agree with Shrek, I would avoid the 6.0 and even the 6.4. A lightly used (and mod free) 7.3 is like the holy grail. Mine just turned over 411k and I plan to drive it for several more years. Diesel power is great when you need it but they are more work to maintain if you are not used to that type of stuff.
Best of luck to you.
