I have a euro bull elk mount that lives outside in my entryway corridor. It doesn't see any direct sun but gets wet from rain and snow throughout the year.
I recently noticed it is starting to discolor to a pink/ red hue in some areas of the skull. I can only assume it is some sort of bacteria that is starting to grow. I took it down, tried pressure washing and scrubbing with a brillow pad. It did not help. I left it out in the sun to let the skull dry out and it seems like the sun exposure did help some areas.

Has anyone experienced something similar? What is the best course of action to clean affected area? I'm not opposed to re-bleaching the entire skull, but exploring all options first.

I would not use bleach.
Not sure if the skull was sealed but that’s probably what is discoloring.
I’d skiff it with scotch brite pads. Wouldn’t hurt to use a little acetone to clean anything off.
Get basic white powder and 40 volume developer. Mix to a milkshake consistency. Cover the skull with the paste. Can use painters tape on the bottom of the antler burrs to prevent them from whitening. Wrap in clear food wrap. ( Saran wrap). Leave overnight. Can set it in the sun, heat helps but you don’t want it to dry out. Rinse with warm water. Let dry and should be a lot better.

Theres a chemical you can get from Van Dykes that works better than bleach and peroxide

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Am I correct in assuming it's bacteria that is growing from not drying out?
I guess I'll just re-whiten the skull.

Well actually I'm not. My buddy at work has gotten so geeked out on the 3D printing that he has 4 units all purchased in under 6 weeks. He is so hot on using his gear that we scroll around and find cool stuff to make and it shows up a day or two latter.
Duck calls, glide baits, crank baits, deer sculls even printed me a bear skull. still waiting on my baboon skull, I may need to purchase my own spool of filament hehe. I will ask my buddy tomorrow and get the skinny on the printers. I know at least one is a Bambu lab not sure of the model. Below is the bear skull in Bone color.

PS. Just got the info....Bambu Labs P2S, Reality K1 and a Snapmaker U1

I've gone to the 3D printed skulls. They look great and so simple to do.
I should add that the antlers in this photo were at an estate sale ($10) the California tag issued in 1966 was still intact and wired around the antler. They were on the typical old school skull plate. I wanted to give new life to the set that were slightly whitened. I cut them from the old plate and did the coffee grounds re-staining and installed on the 3D printed bright white skull. Wife thinks they are cool enough to put right over the TV.
