Low and slow has been my method for years (homemade water heater element inside a plastic storage tote), then hit with a pressure washer, degrease in dishsoap a while longer and then peroxide paste.
I've always tried to skin heads ASAP and get started on the process. But this year went differently. Killed a buck mid December. Donated the buck to a friend and he cut the head off for me. Figured I'd get it in a few days. I got busy and it sat in the bed of an old pick up for 3 weeks. This is Alabama, so temps ranged from 20's to 70's. When i got the head, the smell had me dry heaving like I've never experienced. Immediately dropped the head (hide and all) in my homemade container, covered it with water and dawn dish soap and cut on the heating element. The next day, everything washed right off; hide, meat, brains, eyeballs, cartilage, with only a regular water hose. I stuck the skull back in a fresh water and more soap cause the initial smell was still stuck in my nostrils from the day before. But that was as clean as I've ever had one when it came out of the heater bucket.
