Just call them "Flyers", say that you "Didn't do my part", and then count them as a hit anyway.

I read on the internet that's how you're supposed to do it. "0.25MOA all day boyz..."

For those who haven't done this do before: make sure your gun is no joke zeroed before you try it. Tiny clusters just outside the prone bull are really disappointing.

Hey, I’d love to shoot 200yds plus if they were much closer. I’m just zeroing my rifles (223 and 308) at the 100yd range. Will definitely take my accurate rifles out to a 200yd range at some point. Then 300yds if I can even find one nearby! NJ here. Let me know if you have a favorite range for 300yds nearby!

Pennsylvania has a lot of public ranges on state land. I'm originally from NY and there was essentially zero opportunity to shoot past 100 yards without being a paid member of club.

I can stretch to 250 around here in FL but long ride to shoot further. 1:15 hr ride to 250 yards…

Yes, I know. I started out getting the cheap range pass to shoot at the range outside of Bethlehem. The 200yd ranges are like 2 hours away from me. Wound up at EFGA as the most economical range.

Read through this a while back so this may have been answered to some extent. It seems a 223 bolt gun may be optional for practice. I have an AR in 223 and an bolt action 6.5 Creedmoor I can download the creed to Grendel levels and cost would be similar to my 223 reloads. What are the options for the better platform for practice, thanks.

I am using a Weatherby Vanguard 30-.06 for elk and would like to start doing this routine to practice, but want something with cheaper ammo if I'm going to shoot a lot. Would you recommend the Tikka 223 or a Vanguard 223 as a practice rifle to match what I'll be hunting with? Or is there another good practice option with cheaper ammo?

Tikka. And while you’re at it sell the Vanguard to buy a second Tikka in .243 or 6.5 if you can swing it.

How about a howa mini in 7.62x39.

So you need three things:

1. Cheap to shoot (so you'll actually put in a decent amount of range time.)

2. Something that will shoot 100m, and is functional for field positions. (So you practice real-world conditions.)

3. Something that is consistently accurate. It doesn't need to be a laser beam, but needs to be boringly consistent. (So when you miss, you know it's you and not the rifle.)

For a lot of people, the 223 Tikka hits all three of these. I know it did for me. Other rifles could work, but typically struggle with #3.

The goal here is to avoid being a tinkerer/gear slut, and put the focus on accurately shooting from field positions. Don't dwell on the gear.

I'll go against the grain and say get a 223 in the Vanguard. Ammo is still low cost but more importantly, it'll do more for developing muscle memory than a different make/model just because it is Rokslide-approved.

I agree - nothing gained moving away from Howa/Vanguard, just less money in the bank afterward.

@Formidilosus do you have any thoughts on whether I ought to get a Vanguard in 223 for consistency with my hunting rifle versus the Tikka route? The Vanguard is on sale for $500 at Sportsmans Warehouse at the moment, which sounds nice on my student budget. Don't see any used Tikkas up for sale.

How does your 30-06 shoot? I'd say go for it and see how it shoots, can always sell it later. A tikka if you can find one these days will run you at least 700.

I don't have a ton of experience shooting it yet at long distance. But I was getting solid groups at 300 when able to do that. And put a shot right on at about 380 using a holdover to finish off my elk.

So it seems to shoot well enough. Probably is more accurate than I am at this point.

That's the thing honestly, most rifles are plenty accurate and will do their part if the shooter does theirs. Can you get a junk barrel or action, sure but pretty unlikely I'd say. How far are you planning to shoot?

For this season, I want to be confident out to 400 with some wind. I don't think it will take too much more shooting to get myself there.

It would be great if I can get to where I could confidently take a 600yd shot if conditions are good. And I really want to get some more experience with wind, since my elk hunting is in Wyoming.

But ideally I won't ever take a first shot past 300 anyway.

It takes a lot of shooting to make a 223 worth it as just a trainer. For me I bought one as a trainer, and now use it as a hunting rifle at times, but what it really did for me was teach me the value in a low recoil rifle.

$500 buys a lot of ammo. I’d be looking to buy a reliable scope (if you don’t have one already) and as much same lot ammo as you can for your rifle.

Following that I’d begin by behind honest and shooting the above drill, along with some of the stuff in this link.

Key would be learning to shoot from field positions.

I’d be personally looking at a lot of different things besides a new rifle to become more proficient on a budget. Assuming your current rifle is consistent and reliable.
